dome thermo

My dome thermo always reads about 100 outside even when its only 78. I calibrated it and its fine with the boiling water. With the elevation and humidity calc. it says i should boil @ 209. Its dead on at 209. When cool its 20 off. I guess its a no-brainer to go with the 209 instead of cool. Just kinda puzzles me.

While in the dome? The other day mine read 130° when I removed the cover, and it wasn't that hot out. Sun.
  • Right!! If it is accurate at he temp where you are cooking, it wlll not matter that it is not accurate at rest. B)

they are manufactured to operate within a range.

calibrate it to be at 212 when you have it in boiling water, and ignore the "resting" temp.

the dome is alos picking up heat from the sun, so the thermo shouldn't just read the ambient air temp (78), but the air temp plus the heat from the sun.

just as your car interior picks up heat, so will the egg (especially dark green as it is)

Mine went "Tango-Uniform" shortly after I bought my BGE and didn't come close to reading the ambient temperature when I wasn't cooking. BGE HQ said that wasn't right and sent me a replacement at no charge. How can a thermometer (designed for cooking) be deemed "reliable" if it goes silly outside of a reasonable temperature range? Obviously there's a 'quality- control' issue here and next time I'll just bite the bullet and purchase something of integity. Obviously, like gaskets, this is not an isolated problem! Perhaps, whom ever is at the helm will enlighten those of us out in the field as to what we can expect..

my BGE thermo is bent, from hitting a butt when i shut the lid. yet it's spot on whenever i get around to checking it (once a year maybe).

there's a hard core group of folks trash talking the bge thermo, but i have never had an issue and i don't think it's widespread.

all thermometers work within a fixed range, outside of which they may or may not be accurate. i see no logic to expecting the BGE thermo to read 72 degrees when it's 72 degrees out. i want it to read correctly when it's 200-800. and mine does.

Have you checked it at a higher temp than 212*?
