Large vs XL

edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
I've owned a large for a year and a half now and am loving it. A buddy is about ready to take the plunge but cannot decide between a large/XL. I seem to remember when I was researching my purchase there were some design issues with the XL pertaining to the hinge and other things. I can't seem to find any references to it anymore. Have these issues been resolved? Is there any reason to buy a large over an XL other than price and capacity? Any input from XL users would be appreciated.

  • XL = more lump to get it cookiing
XL dome is too low for a whole turkey unless you squash it
For the price you can buy 2 larges

I have a Large, Small, and mini.

For about the price of the XL your friend could have both a Large and SMall BGE. Then he could cook at two completely different temps :) more versatility.

  • I believe at least some of the issues with the XL have been worked out. I am sure someone will chime in with the correct info. Regardless, I would suggest he get a large. For the price of an XL (or close to it) he can get a large and a medium, or a large and a small. Then he can cook 2 different meats at 2 different temps, or meat in one and sides on another. The only reason I would get a large is if was cooking for very large groups, or catrering. Either way, he will be EGGING.

I cooked a whole turkey in my XL.. 24+ pounds

Two Larges cost me $100.00 more then one XL at Eggtoberfest.. You remember the two you brought back to Raleigh don't ya??

I think the owners of the list should make this a sticky thread. We seem to hash it out over and over. I had the same delima and went with the XL. I love all that grill space and can do large cooks without having to stack stuff. I have not owned a large but the XL does not seem to use much lump. The bottom line is they are both great grills and which ever one someone buys they are going to think it is the best.

The XL is overkill for MOST people.

I own both and my Large and Small get the bulk of the cooking. I use the XL when I have to cook for more then 30 people and can only use on cooker.

The hinge and spring issues have been corrected. There is still an issue with the plate setter, but a bird told me they have been addressed too.

However, for the average Joe A large is more than they will ever need. Save the money and buy a Large and a Small if you have the money for an XL.
  • Pete,

    I REMEMBER!!

Would boast about the CA summer weather but the "six" on my keyboard is stuck.

    Best regards,
    Rich

PS I guess I was referring to one of those Alaskan turkeys.

I just did my first turkey on my XL this past week. Did it the Mad Max way. It was 21 lbs and awesome!

When the dealer sold it two me, he claimed it will do (2) 20 lb birds. After this first one, I can attest to that!

    Plenty of room to spare.

Last weekend I cooked for 10 people. I had corn on the cob, burgers, chicken breast and baked potatoes on the XL at once. The grill was full. I love all that grill space!!

I hear tell the Californians are trying to imitate the Great SMOKY Mountains for ya..
  • I agree with going the large and small route but this is a go with the biggest guy. At least he will get all the pros and cons from these replies.

What is the issue with the platesetter?
