Is there such a thing as high temp mortar for assembling fire bricks? Or would a simple alternative be something like rutland adhesive? The goal of this silliness would be to ensure there was no gap between two adjacent bricks through which hot things like sparks and embers could pass and start a fire.

There is.
I can't recall the name, but a full service Brickyard should stock it. It comes pre-mixed in 1 or 5 gallon buckets, and is very much like joint compound in consistancy. IIRC joint size is supposed to be about 1/8" to 1/4" maximum with this stuff.

Refractory mortar is often (always?) used where the temps get real high. I just googled "high temperature mortar" and came up with lots of hits. E.g., http://rumford.com/articleRefmortar.html

saw some at h/d last year in their fireplace section , shouldbe available at a stove shop, brickyard and maybe a blowes or home despot

Rutland Refractory Cement is what I use to rebuild my firebox. That was about 5 years ago and it's still together. It costs about $20 a pail.

As you know I can buy Rutland products quite easily and would offer to send you some refractory mortar, but that stuff is so heavy that shipping is 4 times of cost of the product - I know as I have sent some before! Hopefully you can locate some out there. After all Rutland is a Vermont based company though much of their product is made back here in IL about 70 miles from me.

I bought my Rutland at our local lumber/hardware store. It is the 1 gallon size for $22-senior discount. 11oz tubes of Rutland furnance cement cost $7.

Masonry/ Building Supply yards should have something called "Fire Clay", which is a powder, sold in a large (50#) bag, that masons use for the fire bricks inside a fire place- probably just the situation you are looking at.
