I was replacing my fire ring today and figured since I was in the neighborhood, might as well lift out the fire box and see what was underneath it. Boy, was I surprised. Ash! How often should I lift out the fire box to clean underneath it? Or is there a better way?

I usually lift out the fire ring about once a month or two. It can get clogged in the holes and ash will fall behind it.
I guess it really depends on use...your call. -
I rarely lift out the firebox. Have a piece of surgical tubing about 18" long that with the shop vac I can snake around the fire box thru the vent. It works for me and cost of the tubing was less that a dollar.

i suck the ash out with my dyson vacuum cleaner.

I usually remove the internals before I do a high temp cook (eg pizza). I use a stainless steel wok spatula to remove the ash. It's no big deal and only takes a couple of minutes.

I use a shop vac, putting the nozzle into the lower vent every 4-5 cooks. I do a full internal cleaning, removing all components to get evey spec about once every two months.

Isn't the plain old BGE ash scraper turned vertical sufficient to reach far enough behind the fire box for scraping out the ashes there? Doesn't this make pulling out the fire box not necessary?
