Okay... I have mold!

It's been 3 weeks since I've fired up ol' Eggy and I now have mold (I was up at cabin using Eggy Jr.) as I discovered when I opened it to clean in prep for some low & slow chuck roast (who knew we'd have a mini-rainy season in GA!... that said...
I have read through several "mold" posts... Here's my plan... fire it up with existing charcoal to 500... burn about 1 hour then cool down and clean out...
Oh.. and cook something else tonight since it'll take too long for my chuck roast...
thoughts?

That will work fine. Just need to cook on it more.

I normally cook on it 2-3x week... I've just been out of town.. thanks!

you don't have to treat it like nuclear waste.
fire it for a half hour or so, then just brush off whatever is on the dome and grid.
you should still be able to cook on the thing.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
Thanks! that's funny... made me laugh!

well, just don't treat it like it's some deadly poison.
i had some in the small, i fired it up, let the thing go to temp (say 650), and figured that it was very likely dead by that point. scraped the grid with the grill brush, flipped it, scraped again, and ran the brush over the inside of the dome to remove anything loose.
i shut the dome, went inside to prep, and came out in another 5 or ten minutes.

GirlyEgg,
The same thing happened to me last month or so. I posted my problem on the forum and it was advised to just burned it off. I did an hour 'sterilization' at 500 degrees and it was fine.
I may not have treated it as nuclear waste, but just a biohazard requiring autoclaving.

I would recommend that before you fire it up that you first clean out all the old ash.
