Defective BGE Gasket - HELP!

Hi,

I installed my gasket on my meticulously cleaned Egg on Sunday, and after I fired up the egg, the adhesive tape not only loosened from the Egg, but also loosened to the felt! It felt plenty tacky when I put it on, but the heat loosened it to the point where the gasket fell apart as soon as I opened the lid.

Can anyone thing of an adhesive I could apply directly to the felt so I can stick on the ceramic lid? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Chris

  • 3M Super 77 contact cement spray available at Home Depot. Did you install the "old" style felt gasket(black) or the nomex (white)?

the 3M brand Super77 spray adhesive works good, but if you followed the instructions for the gasket instalation and let it sit 24 hrs before using your egg you should not have had the gasket failure so soon afterwards.

Oh, and if it matters, it is the grey felt gasket... is there a new gasket available?

As it turns out, Home Depot in Canada doesn't stock the Super 77 adhesive... is there a type of adhesive I can use without fear of toxicity?

any art supply store should carry it. its primary use is mounting photographs, etc. on fome-cor board

  • Yes. It is called nomex and is supposed to be superior to the felt with a very high temperature rating. Do yourself a favor and do a search for "nomex" and you will learn all you ever wanted to know about it and more. Trust me.

smuttt: I respectfully disagree with your assertion that the gasket will somehow "cure" itself in 24 hours and prevent the failures that have been so prevalent recently. Many have followed BGE's gasket installation instructions to the letter and still had adhesive failures. I'm sure others will chime in on this if they have any energy left to beat a dead horse even more dead.

P.S. Don't click the "Back" button after you post. It creates a double post.
  • Stike, are you going to Eggtoberfest? I'm really looking forward to meeting you in person some time. The wife (Thea) gave me the scrunched-eyebrow approval for the trip after I advised of the costs, so we will be making the "BIG ONE" our first Eggfest. Made the hotel reservations, now just need to get the flghts in order. Mark

Again, thanks for all your responses. I had no idea there were issues with the felt gasket... I did indeed follow the instructions to the letter, and it sat on my deck for 4 days before I fired it up. There is obviously an issue with the adhesive, it loosened both on the lid AND on the felt sides.

Am now going to investigate nomex!

    Regards,

I did 3 gaskets replacments, none of which failed at any time, The one I have on there now is burnt and crispy, but it works. The real key is after it sets for 24 hours or more is to do low temp cooks, 300 or below. this I have found to be key, another factor is cleaning the white ceramic with rubbing alcohol. This makes sure there is not any residue left over. If your ceramic is not near while/yellow clean, then is is not clean for gaskets. Just my two cents

You can get Super 77 in Canada. You may have to go to a fastener supply like Brafasco.

    Hey Tach18k,

Well, I did not do low temp cooks, I started out with steaks at 700 degrees four days after I installed the gasket.

How did you get your ceramic to near white? I used acetone and scrubbed to high heaven, but it was still a bit blackened from my last crisped gasket.

Have glued it with the Super 77 and it is curing now. Fingers crossed...

I have now lost & replaced 6.3 gasket sets - the partial was a patch.

The 'cure' is a myth - I guess I better say in my opinion.

I do have some thoughts on this.

Do us a favor. Explain your lump level, how you started. How long the egg was in the 700° range. Was there a flashback or flare up when you opened the dome. If so how high did you open the dome.

Do you know at what point the adhesive failed?

Where on the egg did the adhesive fail?

Anything else that you might think of with this firing.

How much have you cooked on this egg and what were he max temps?

Now, I would guess your dome was out of alignment and or you had a flashback or flashover.

If flashback/flashover the failure was where the flame came out of the egg and there was probably a fair amount of smoke in the egg when/if there was a flashback/flashover. And or you held 700° for an extended time period. Possibly you had something inside the egg (non food) close to the inside gasket area at the failure point.

    Thanks, GG

I have done two gasket replacements without a problem. I didn't use acetone. I used a painter's knife to scrape the old gasket off and a couple of grill bricks to get all the old gasket off. once the ceramic was smooth to the touch I cleaned it and applied the gasket. You gotta make sure you don't stretch it and to do several low temp burns before going high.

I did this with the felt and the nomex and have not had any problems. But then I could be just lucky.

    'grill brick' - I wouldn't go there.

The bare top and bare bottom surface on the egg without bands attached should match - no gaps.

Using 'brick', sanding wheels, scrapers that will attack the ceramic surface or any other device or material that will change the surface match should not be used. If one talks with BGE they will be told that voids the warranty (if BGE found out about it).

If there are 'waves' in either mating surface it could be (or is) a problem.

There are several fast ways to remove the gasket while risking possible loss of warranty and keeping the surfaces true to one another.

philsGrill mentioned he got his egg to a higher temp, not sure of the exact temp, and the gaket easily came off as well as the adhesive.

A week or so I posted a way to remove, clean and replace a gasket on my medium in less than 25 minutes.

The last failure, which I posted pictures of last week I had a very simular experience as Phil.

My egg was at 700° and the adhesive released. I let the egg cool to 500° opened the dome and took the failure pictures.

I decided to grab a scraper and clean off the adhesvie/gasket. I was working with heat but the adhesive/gasked scraped (used putty knife) off in less that 8-10 minutes including getting away from the heat. Very easy and quick. Easier than using "Oops!"

Some have suggested to use MAPP. I haven't tried that but after my experience this seems like MAPP might be a good solution.

    Just a possible alternate solution.

Agreed. Lost my 4th gasket in 8 weeks last night. I have a rutland kit to try now. I even followed RRP instructions for the rutland kit for cleaning the egg edge before putting my last BGE gasket on. Felt came off, adhesive stayed on the egg. Now I have another big cleaning job to do.
