I have an oportunity to get an XL BGE from a fellow in texas that I now, he said he would ship it but I would have to line out the details, so I wanted to post up here and see if you all could help me out finding a cheaper shipping method other than FEDEX or UPS (read, $650-$700). Any help?

Try a freight company like Conway. I've used them for heavy items in the past and they always are very careful and provide great service.
I think your real challenge will be packing the egg for travel... -
The safest way is strapped in the back of Hungryman's patrol car!
Really, there is more trouble by buying that thing on Ebay and having it show up cracked and with warranty or claim from the shipper. Just tring to sace you $499+$75 worth of hassle. -
Hmmm... it would be pretty expensive to ship and I would be worried about damage.
Where are you located?

If you are buying on eBay pay with PayPal make sure you pay for insurance. If it arrives broken PayPal will protect you. Both PayPal and eBay (same folks) protect the buyer.
However, you will probably have to return the item and shipping is on your shoulders.
You won't have warranty for BGE. To me not haveing warranty from BGE is a critical mistake.

I once purchased several authentic casino slot machines on ebay that were about 100-150 lbs. each and after packing with lots of heavy foam the box was roughly 3'x2'x2' or about the size of the large Uhaul closet box. I figured nobody would ship it but FEDEX ground delivered it to my home from over 800 miles away for only $75. I had three of them delivered separately and none were damaged. And these were more fragile than an egg with glass and wooden parts in addition to lots of electronics, sensitive mechanisms, and heavy steel. The key is to package it properly, which is very difficult unless your friend works in a warehouse and can get the proper expanding foam to make a custom carton. An alternative would be for your friend to visit a local egg dealer and ask them to give him the packaging from an XL that they sold locally.
Most shippers will take up to 150 lbs. and they only charge a premium for very large packages. If it were me I would try to get the original BGE packaging and then strap that to a small pallet for FEDEX ground or UPS.
Even if you have to use a freight company like DHL, Conway, etc. then it still might be fairly reasonable. We had a full pallet of 1,330 lbs. of Wicked Good charcoal delivered over 800 miles for less than $200. If you are really clever you could go to a local truck stop near you and post an index card on the bulletin board. If you waited around even 30 minutes you could probably find someone with a regular run from Texas to your town. Get their tag number, pay them $100 at pickup and $100 on delivery. Win win. -
Or lose your $100 up front and your BGE if it doesn't show up or it shows up and is damaged you are out $200 shipping for a broken BGE. Common old saying "If it seems to good to be true it probably is". TNmike

Yeah, shipping is way too high, at least from the FedEx quote I got. Also I don't want a cracked Egg. Im in Oak Ridge, TN close to Knoxville, but I can't find a good deal on an Egg where I'm at. -

If he only pays $100 when the egg is picked up and he has the tag number of the truck then he is pretty safe. Especially if the truck is part of a carrier line or company. If it is a privately owned rig then the owner is probably even more trustworthy since it is not cheap to operate your own rig. Ever see how much those things cost? More than most homes when new...Or lose your $100 up front and your BGE if it doesn't show up or it shows up and is damaged you are out $200 shipping for a broken BGE. If the driver looks questionable then ask for a look at his drivers license or just wait for another driver. People need to be more trusting these days. The media would have you believe that practically everyone is out to rape, murder, rob, kill, steal, cheat, and lie but the fact is that the vast majority (95% or more) of people in America are just as trsutworthy and honest as you.
Sure, if the used XL egg is costing a bundle after shipping then he is better off to get a new egg locally with the warranty. But if he can save $300-$400 or more then it is probably worth it. Sometimes it seems like people on this forum would criticize someone for getting a used or new egg for free instead of buying a new one from a local dealer with the warranty. The warranty is great but good deals are out there on used eggs. Just take all the factors into consideration. -
Check out the rates on the BGE page from a demo at Eggtoberfest. It will only be used that day and will have a full warranty.

I am watching a used egg for my parents right now. I still think the best way is used from the mothership or demo at an eggfest. You get the price advantage and full warranty.
In this case, the price is waaay below market if the guy will sell the egg. -
WileECoyote,
That is some darn good advice...
I have been killed by surcharges with oversize packages using UPS Brown & FedEx Ground. DHL has been OK.

I agree... That warranty is so important. But I have said that before.

Rent a uhaul van 29.95 a day, can work.

I have found that hands down FedEx is the best way to ship fragile items. Their trailers have multiple levels eliminating stacking. All of the pieces of the egg need to be cushioned and everything should be strapped on a pallet. If you could get the original packaging it would make things easier.
