3 M 77 spray adhesive?

When replacing a gasket on a large is it good to use a spray adhesive to help that puppy stay on? What do most people do when replacing the standard gasket?

    With the factory gasket I've never had a problem with it coming loose. Actually it was a pain in the a*# to get the old one off without adhesive. Haven't tried the nomex or rutland so can't speak for them.

    Pat,
    just had a guy who bought a large last weekend come in with a plastic baggie with his gasket in it. it wasn't fried so i think the standard adhesive needs a little help.will 3m 77 spray work?

    That is the one most here on the forum recommend. I just haven't needed it myself. Just put a factory one on yesterday and it will set for a few days before I use it. If I have a problem the 3M 77 is what I'll use. I think a lot of gasket problems are because the dome and base are not adjusted right.

    For the standard gasket just peel and stick. I have had a few failures with the Nomex which require the 3M, after the backing peels off.

    I agree.

    I have lost 3 gaskets and 8 inches of a 4th. In my case it is alignment causing gasket failure.

    Felt I haven't needed to use 3M 77. I will use it when I put Nomex on. Hopefully I can get the tape adhesive off of the Nomex before intalling.

    The MSDS for 3M 77 shows the strength falling off pretty sharply above 120 F. Also, the test bonding materials had fairly smooth, non-porous characteristics. Not much like ceramic.

    My own experience has been that Super 77 used with porous materials, such as wood and cardboard, needs a longer time and pressure to form the best bond.

    My guess is that it wouldn't add much to the standard gasket adhesive.

    Definitely let it set up, as it will flame before dried.

    I have used Permatex Ultra Copper RTV which is good for a max. of 700*, and it doesn't require masking.
    A very thin strip of it is all that is required.

    I installed a nomex not long ago and used 3m 77 adhesive, On a month with some of the typical cooks. I tried a burn off the other night and went out and lifted the lid and the gaskets were stuck together and the top fell off. gasket ok just fell off. I am going back to the original gasket and not use the adhesive.

    You know,......I'm one who has read all these posts about the new Nomex gasket install failures with a grain of salt. I'm an EGG fan, and fortunately have not had most of the typical problems some folks here describe. So I usually view many of these posts from somewhere between bad luck and whining.

    HOWEVER, I recently installed a Nomex gasket on my 5 year old Large BGE. Only reason that I needed a new gasket was because I forgot I had started the Egg and left botto and top vents wide open. Let me tell ya' I have no problems acheiving high temps! When finally cooled, the gasket was welded shut. Entirely my fault.

    To make a long story medium sized, I installed Nomex. Let the Egg sit for ten days (was out of town). Second cook at 350 - a 10 inch section of lower gasket was loose. Third cook, an additional 6 inch section came loose. Both on the lower gasket. I never have had a problem with the "old" felt gasket.

    I reinstalled both sections with 3M 77 and they seem secure. Only been about a week, so we'll see. I think the Mothership needs to do a better job with this adhesive.

    From the Material Data Sheet for the Permatex:

    This product does not contain microcyrstalline silica. May cause eye and skin irritation. ****When
    this product if exposed to moisture, butanone oxime may be formed. When heated to temperatures
    above 300 degrees F. in the presence of air, this product can form formaldehyde vapors.
    Formaldehyde is a potential cancer hazard and a known skin and respiratory sensitizer.     Safe handling
    conditions may be maintained by keeping vapor concentrations below the OSHA permissible limit for
    formaldehyde. May be harmful if swallowed.

    Believe it or not I have used Elmers glue for a standard felt gasket and never have had a problem.
