Alright I bought this, http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5969633, Lodge 12" cast iron skillet for making blackened chicken, etc. Well with the handle on it, I can't fit it down on the fire ring to get it to high heat. Would it be alright for me to bend the handle up just so it fits? Any opinions??

Cut the handle with a hacksaw or other metal cutting blade equipped tool.

Not shure where you planned on setting the skillet ... just on top of the grate sitting on the fire ring? Or were you trying to span the fire ring with the skillet? Anyway, you can't bend cast iron, but you can take an angle grinder or hacksaw and cut the handle off.

You might want to check these out. They are also lodge, but a two sided griddle. I think it's 10-1/2" square.

If all else fails, my 10" cast pan will fit in my large because I use it as the weight for a sandwich press. Maybe you can just exchange the 12" one.

Cast iron is brittle and can not bend without breaking. Saw or grind the handle off.

Love that griddle, where did you get it?.

Omaha, I personally like the "bend the handle up" idea. If you bent it 135 degrees over, it would still function as useful handle but would be out of the way. Can you bend cast iron or will it just snap?

it will break if you try to bend it. how much does it miss by, mine fits with the handle, i would grind just enough to get it to fit and keep the handle but others want to see the pan centered on the grate

Mine was a gift, but any lodge dealer (like a sporting or camping store) may have it or you can order direct from them.

My post or my gasket?

I have a spare in the basement somewhere.....one of these years I'm going to get around to changing them.

  • I agree with “civil eggineer”….Cast doesn’t bend!
Cast iron will stress (bending at its own rate and degree when over heated “stressed”), but will not bend at any rate, at any temperature. At least where you / I / we want it to bend!
I don’t have my #12 here (it’s at the cabin), but I would think it would fit in the large egg…But, maybe not. I’ll have to give it a try.
Anyway….The handle won’t bend, so you may have to “cut to fit”. Good luck
