MAPP gas questions...

1) How long do you hold the flame in one spot on the coals?

2) How many spots do you light?

3) How many "fires" or "cooking sessions" do you get out of a 16 ounce bottle of MAPP gas?

2) Are the MAPP canisters refillable, or do you trash them and buy new ones?

3) What type of torch works best for lighting charcoal with MAPP gas? I've looked at the BernzOmatic line... straight, curved, with trigger start, with flame adjustment, with auto shutoff, etc?

I light in 4-5 spots, cook on the Egg at least 5 times a week, and I can't remember how long ago I changed out the cannister, probably a year. Definitely get the torch head with the trigger start. -RP

I don't use MAPP for starting the Egg, but do use it for some hobby metalworking...MAPP is being phased out, it's really hard to find. I bought 5 or 6 canisters a couple of months ago when I heard the plumbers were hoarding it.

The replacement gas is called MAPP Pro. It's a propylene based gas, it looks to be hotter than propane but not as hot as MAPP.

Completely agree. Bought this about a year ago and haven't changed the bottle yet, although I don't cook as often as you, with the job I only cook on the weekends.

Just changed a bottle in 8 months, however, I had used that bottle before getting an egg.

I hold the flame for about 20 seconds in each spot with a bit of movement back and forth

    Light 4 to 5 spots

    Not refilable

Head is the BernzOmatic with trigger start.

I 'think' the cost of the MAPP is less than using starting cubes.

Frankly the oil and napkin is just about as fast in getting the lump burning and up to temp.

When it's cold I change over to a weed burner.

I love my MAPP. It has decreased my prep time immensely. I have the BernzOmatic curved with trigger start.

I have had it for a couple of months and do not appear to be in need of any refill.

For me, I keep it in one spot for about 10 seconds or so. Depending on how high temp my cook will be will determine the number of spots lit. It can get quite hot when I am lighting 6 or 7 spots for a TRex steak.

That is the one I have.

It is about $40 at Home Depot and definitely worth it while cooking on the EGG.

I've used a weedburner since day one and never looked back - this one in particular is awesome:

    http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/product_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474396672609&bmUID=1215719124214&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443280094&assortment=primary&fromSearch=true

A weed burner is, in my opinion, way safer than a MAPP torch, where you need to stick your hand in the egg and get sparks in the face.

    To your questions:

    1) A count of 20 steamboats in each spot.

    2) One spot in the middle for low and slow, 3-4 spots in and around for a hot fire.

3)The propane bottle lasts at least a whole season. It's just cheap coleman propane, 6 bucks a bottle.

4)No, they get recycled on hazardous waste day.

I've been using my mapp for about 5 months, I use a trigger type head off my propane bottle.

That would be the same one I use.
  • I use the same mapp set up as above. I have a nest and find that the curve below the trigger is perfect to set in the lip of your egg and rest slightly against the edge of the nest table. I pull the trigger, set in place and let it run a bit, then move it a couple time… hands are clear from sparks.

Guess I better load up on the stuff though.

How far do you guys open the supply valve? I'm fixing to be on my third bottle of MAPP since December...I recently picked up a Bernzomatic weed burner, and it looks like a walking cane. Definitely not as powerful as the MAPP torch. BTW, I'm using the TS8000 torch, and mine has a silver/gray paint on it, not black like in the picture.

Tried the oil and napkin thing one time..smoked like the dickens and since I have my eggs on a screened in porch ran everbody in the house..may have done something wrong...but nobody mentioned this b4 I tried it so thought I should just FYI...most here assume the egg is sitting outside 20 feet from the house..not the case in my case...gotta watch the sparks with MAPP, but with a lil strategic placement of the torch..should be no problem..

    the less oil the better.

the idea is that the oil helps the paper burn, versus trying to get the oil to ignite.

you want flame, too. if you shut the vents and the dome and for some reason the fire goes out, it'll just smolder.

like firestarters when they just sit there and smoke

The one in my picture is the TS 8000. Must just be a different color than yours. Low and slow, I light three spots on top for about 15 seconds each. Nuke temps five or six places for the same amount of time. Then I dump another layer of lump on top, about 1-2" thick. In 20 minutes the thermo is burried.

I open the valve fully, light it and engage the stay lit button and hold it near the bottom.

No wonder I can't find any yellow bottles locally. I wanted to get a backup so it would be here if I ran out.
