putting on new gasket..any tips?

replacing my gasket on the medium today. i removed the old one and cleaned the rim as good as i could..there is still some black gunk that acetone and a box cutter dont seem to dent.
i had to go with the standard felt becuase bge says they dont have the high temp version avaible for a medium yet. anyway, mylocal dealer had a felt one in stock.
should i worry about the black gunk that i could not remove? also, should i use any additional glue other that the adhesive that comes on the replacement gasket?
any advise would be a big help. hope i'm cooking by the 4th!

I have not actually replaced one yet but what I have read is: mask of the entire egg surfaces except the egg edges, spray adhesive around edge, attach felt WITHOUT stretching it. Allow to set 48 hours and gently break it in with some low temp cooks.
I am sure others will provide better advice. -
I replaced the gasket on my Medium several weeks ago with one of the BGE felt gaskets. No extra adhesive, but I did make sure not to stretch it (they gave me plenty).
I broke it in with several low-temp cooks before hitting a good searing temp (have gone high several times since then), and I haven't had any problems.
Hope this helps! -
sweet...i'm going for it.
thanks stu! -
I don't understand no nomex for medium. It comes in a roll and for my large I cut it in half a nd had about 6 or 7 inches left from each half. With a med. you would just have more left over. The ceramic on a medium isn't thinner than a large is it?I've never seen one but sure wouldn't think so.I would certainly prefer the nomex over felt because it truly is a far superior product.
Good luck

Yeah, I'm waiting patiently for the nomex for the medium. The felt is holding up at the moment, but I know I'll incinerate it at some point!

Can't you just buy the large and cut it to size?
-
I'm not sure if they're selling them right now or just sending them as replacements for people who have registered Large or XL eggs. I believe they're still in the testing phase. Certainly should work if they'll send one for an owner who has a medium.

The problem is you'd have to cut it to size lengthwise. I took the BGE Medium/Small/Mini replacement gasket kit that I haven't installed on our Small yet out to the cook area and held it up to the gasket on our new Large. The gasket on the Large is significantly wider. I don't have either an XL egg or an XL gasket so I can't comment on them, but the gaskets do come in at least two widths. And it sounds like the Nomex version doesn't come in the narrow width. Can't you just buy the large and cut it to size? -
I have an XL and a medium and the gasket seems to be more narrow on the medium, so I suspect the gasket for a large may be too wide for a medium. I looked pretty close because I torched the medium gasket on my second cook and am now trying to find a gasket locally.
