EGG Transport Crate for a Small
East Cobb Eggy
Posts: 1,162
I am thinking about building a transporter for my new Small EGG.
I have a trip scheduled for July to a beach house in Florida and want to bring my EGG with me.
I have seen WessB's.
http://www.wessb.com/Tips/smtransport/small_transporter.htm
But it does not appear to have any handles, which I could add to the transporter.
However, I thought I would make a post here to see if anyone has done anything differently or has any suggestions in transporting a small.

We did Wess' and it works great for our small that we take camping. really do not need the handles and I think they might be in the way when you flip it to use as a table when you get there. DO not forget a paver and your feet for it so you do not burn the bottom! And do not grab it by the top alway lift from the bottom

I may build a carry stand but I put my L'il Eggsta in a backseat of my SUV with a blanket wrapped around it (yes it has it's own blanky). I then strap the L'il Eggsta in with a seat belt. My wife said "we never even used to strap the kids in so well"..LOL
I also bring the stand that came with it and put all my tools in a large Tupperware crate...going camping for 8 days and I can't wait... :woohoo: -
Very nice.
I do need to remember to bring my tools.
Thanks for the reminder.

Mainegg,
Thanks for the feedback. I will probably build the WessB one, but thought I would touch base here first.

I used gorilla glue to assemble mine and always lift it by the top. -
So, you grab it by the top??

I built Wessb's in less than 1/2 and hour with scrap wood I had. Works prefect. I use a small piece of foam I had to set in on while in the crate for transport. And also use a few kitchen towels around the top edge to keep the egg firm but able to absorb some California potholes. Mine is going for a road trip this weekend.

EGGcelent.
I can't wait to take mine to the beach.

I built the WessB version too. With yellow carpenters' glue and 3" screws holding it on the top isn't coming off. We lift it from the top.
Every time we hit rough pavement bringing the Small home to NJ from Waldorf we heard the fire box and/or fire ring rattling in the egg. There was no apparent damage but the sound was disconcerting. When we take the Small camping later this summer I'll shove some corrugated cardboard down around the innards. -
Some time back SSN686 put plans on this forum for a mini carrier. It was a alteration of WessB's plan in that he had a compartment in the lower part for carrying the fire ring and assorted things.
You might want to contact him and see if he will share his design. -
Doug,
Thanks a lot for the feedback.
Good idea on the innards.

Rich,
Thanks a lot for this.
Personally, I am not looking to transport a mini. Therefore, some of the plans might not be applicable.
However, it does sound like a good idea to take out the fire ring and box.

My mistake. I misread "Small" and made it "Mini".
But, SSN686's "Mini" carrier is COOL anyway you look at it. -
That design is ok for lifting in and out of your vehicle, but, if you have to carry it any distance it's very cumbersome. I have one, and if I had it to do over again I would make the top piece of plywood 8"-10" longer and make 2 oblong cutouts not too near each end (of the top piece) so you can get your hand "through" for carrying.....you may have to reinforce these two places with another piece of plywood or a board so the handles won't break from the stress......

Pork Butt Mike has a metal wire cart with locking wheels that he bought at Lowes for $70 +-.
He had a friend cut out the top wire so the small could fit down in the cart. It looks real nice...
Check with him as he has some good pics for it... -
Sure do.
