When can I put the cover back on?

After I grill, the outside of the egg (eggsterior?) remains quite hot for several hours. Any opinions about when it's safe to put the official BGE vinyl cover back on? We get a lot of moisture at night and I'd like to cover it, but I am worried about melting the cover or worse.

When it's completely cold. Hehehehehehe

My rule is when you can reasonably put your hand on the cooker. The Naked Whiz

I have the same issue. I decided just to wait till the following afternoon when I return from work. So, as much as I egg, it stays uncovered about half the time.

Once again TNW nailed it. It is that simple.
If you can put your hand on the dome, it should be fine to cover.
(I've noticed that the temp is usually in the 200's.) -
I wait until the dome temp reads 200* and have had no problems. On those many nights the egg is still too hot for me to be comfortable putting the cover on, I have learned to relax: the moisture, rain, and wind won't harm the egg at all. Having to clean bird droppings from the glaze can be an irritant, though.

That's why I stopped using my cover years ago... I use the egg just about every day, just no since in covering it.

That's my criterion, too. I wait until my dome thermo reads well under 200*, then do the hand test.

200º for me too, and that often means the egg doesn't get covered because it's too hot at night and it's wet with dew the following morning.
-
This is the same for me.
It is usually just before I go to bed when I put the cover on.

Boiling water will soften, but not hurt, the vinyl. Since water boils at 212F, I figure a dome temp of 200F is plenty safe. (The hand on egg technique is also good, but I've seen some guys hold items that were way too hot for ME to touch like they were ice cubes.....)

I cover the Egg to protect the table it's in. I also have stuff stored in/on the table that I wouldn't want to leave out in the rain.
If it wasn't in a table I doubt I would cover it.
I have learned that outdoor stuff lasts a lot longer if you can protect it from the elements. Originally I wheeled the table in and out of the garage, but now I just leave it covered.
