awning or umbrella clearence over egg

Hey Folks, first post here. I'll be picking up my new large egg in a couple weeks.

I'm entertaining the idea of some sort of awning or umbrella over my egg and table, similar to what I have seen in some of the Naked Whiz gallery pics.

What's a safe clearance between the top of the BGE and the bottom of a standard umbrella? Is there any particular umbrella material (such as canvas) that I should be looking for?

    I will be interested in the answers to this also. I just bought a LBGE last weekend and have placed it in a screened in porch (Screens 3 sides 6' high). I have had all my other grills in this location without any problem but none of them were true smokers.

    I have Dri Below above mine about 6' at the highest point...no problem...the dri below is white and there is a slight discoloration right above it...

    I utilize an umbrella, placed next to the Egg (with the egg-mate shelf closed). There is about a 4 foot clearance from the top of the dome to the bottom of the umbrella when the dome is shut. Never had a problem and the umbrella is made out of cloth. Yes, I did start to worry about it, then figured I had it open cause it was raining and the entire thing was soaked thru and thru.

    You shouldn't be too worried about the egg as it is a rock when it comes to weather, just need to keep the rain out of the daisy wheel (and off the cook).

    Several of us have been known to venture out in the below freezing weather to get our 'fix' during the winter months.

    This fiberglass umbrella is about 4 ft above the eggs and works great.

    The umbrella is for the sun, not the rain. My back and side yards faces an east/south/west direction. Here in SE Virginia, the summer heat and humidity can get brutal (especially over a hot grille). But I'm all for cookin in the rain too!

    Actually I prefer cooking out on my front yard driveway, so I can sit in the garage (which faces north), and enjoy the TV and beer cooler in there.
    BUT...I guess you know you're a redneck when...your egg is in the driveway :P

    So I have an un-shaded spot for the egg, behind the garage, and I can still have an excuse to hang out in my two-car "cave".

    Dang, I already have the F150 (built right here in Norfolk Va., now the plant is closed :( ), so I guess I'm one third there already!
