3M Super 77

New nomex gasket adhesive failed; peeled of the gasket material. Top gasket fell on top of two nice NY Strips Friday night, bottom just slid off. Grrrr. Those of you who have used the Super 77 to re-adhere, did you spray just the egg, gasket or both. Have to do this asap. I have a huge butt cook at the end of the week. Thanks, Mark

super77 says to spray both surfaces and let them get a bit tacky before adhering.

it's essentially rubber cement.

Mike, I will and Thank you Stike. The print is so small on the can that I can't read it. 3M feels the need to put the instructions on the can in both english and spanish. Your seafood paella looked to die for; Gorgeous! I wish I could get my hands on seafood like that, but I'm in a rural area and Pittsburgh is a two and a half hour plus round-trip drive for fresh seafood, etc. Thanks, Mark

Someone has, several times, put up some pictures and a warning to make sure you mask the egg inside and out before spraying the Super 77.

I had the same problem. BGE headquarters said to use the Super 77. I did it and the first time I got the egg to about 500 the gasket came right down. That new gasket isn't worth crap if you ask me. See-Yaa

Yeah. BGE needs to rethink this one. What good is a great high-temp gasket with crappy low temp adhesive to hold it on. I'm tempted to call the mothership and complain, but they no-doubt are already aware there is an issue.

If you feel like you need to call and complain do so. I would think there is not a group of folks back there just plotting to send out bad adhesive intentionally.

Might be better to call and explain the problem and ask if there is any other solution or something else you can do or if there is a better 'stick on' adhesive.

Hammer has been using/testing the Nomex for about 2 years not and I don't recall him saying he ever had to use 3m Super 77. I tired to find some of the past posts from him regarding this but was not sucessful.

If HQ knows there has been quite a few posts regarding the same problem possibly they will put more urgency to get this part of the problem resovled.

what i did was scrape the egg to clean it up sprayed and pushed it back into place.. i have done this for a friend also.. neither one of us have had a problem since.. we both figured we pulled the gasket too much and streached it.. i have had two nomex gaskets i only had a problem with the second.. i had to replace the first one when i cracked my base :(

Another option is to use a hi-temp silicone adhesive. It goes on like toothpaste and is pliable for several hours. Very easy to use, no need to mask, no worries if you get it wrong, just pull it back and try over.

Once it dries you are not going to have problems with it pulling away any more.

dont worry about the butt cook this weekend keeping the egg low (below 400) for the first 7 cooks might have helped me not to have a repete of the gasket comming loose

Here is the masking photo. If you don't mask you will have overspray and anything in the neighborhood will stick to it.

My nomex is performing just like it is supposed to - after removing the adhesive and installing with 3M 77. A solution may be to buy the nomex material without the adhesive and give instructions on how to install with the 3M or another adhesive that will work. I'm over the moon with mine.

I think you're solution is on the right track Frank. This is not a job anyone wants to do on a regular basis. I call these kinds of jobs PITA's; like cleaning gutters and putting up my wife's Christmas decorations.

Here's a pic of what I did. Been about two weeks ago.. I used the Super 77 spray as well. The blue masking tape is easy remove tape used for masking for painting. The Nomex has worked fine for me so far. No problems, and I have had it up past 650* a time or two also.

I just checked the 3M website - they recommend 3M™ Hi-Tack 76 Spray Adhesive for high temperature applications. You might want to look at it. You can always call 3M and they will guide you to the right decision.

I agree. I have used a Rutland 600 degree caulk. No problems in 3 plus years.

You can also use Hi-temp engine caulk.

MIke, round two went well. Disassembled the Egg again and stripped off what remained of the nomex gasket adhesive goo. I used cardboard cutouts for masking and sprayed both the rims of the base and lid and the gaskets with the 3M Super 77 spray. Applied the gaskets, then reassembled the Egg. Did a test burn to 600+ and the gaskets stuck just fine and showed no signs of burning or melting like the felt would do.

I think BGE should sell the gaskets without the doulble sided tape adhesive and instruct buyers to use the 3M spray or another hi-temp adhesive to glue the gaskets to the base and lid. The doulble sided tape adhesive is worthless. I am ready to cook pork butts!
