My Olympus D-390:
1) Has photos stored in memory card, but camera does not view them on screen: shows "no picture" when quick view is pressed.

2) Only stores 2 or 3 photos before those are replaced by others taken after.

Is this a memory card issue, or is this camera dying?

I would try and find another card to test with.
I would also format your existing card "if" you don't mind loosing the images on the card now. At times a camera card will get jumbled and needs to be formated by the camera. I normally do this every time I dump the images from card to computer. If you have images on your card that need to be saved I have programs to help with this but you would have to send me your card.
The more you try and capture pictures on your existing card the higher the chances of damaging stored photos on your card.
    Good luck,

Pull the photos off the card with photo recovery software (cheap download on line). Then reformat the card. Also, some of the digital cameras have occasional software firmware upgrades that you shoud check for online that you can download through the PC using the cable you are provided for uploading pictures. ALso, the card may be 'dirty'.

I have a Kodak DX6340. From the menu, I can toggle among :
    Internal Memory
    External Memory ( card)
    Combined
You may have the same options, and have only the internal checked.
    Just a thought.

You are a long way from thinking your camera is dead/dying.

I am surprised your camera will allow new pictures and overwrite existing pictures – check your camera settings for this option and change if necessary.

If the pictures are important get them saved on to your computer or other device. Don’t proceed until that is done. The card can be looked at in another device or in a notebook computer or desktop if you have a card reader or card reader built into either type machine. Your camera uses an ‘XD’ card memory card. Card readers are cheap to free if one watches sales at office supply stores and electronic store sales.

Once you have saved your pictures (if they need to be saved), then...

If you still have the supplied stock memory card you have 16MB available. Is there a movie type picture saved on the card, are there extra directories stored on the card. Did camera setting change so the picture sizes are huge?

Card’s can wear out but not likely. If you want to clean the card use an eraser from a pencil and LIGHTLY erase over the contacts on the card. COMPLETELY CLEAN the dust off of the card before putting the card back in the camera. DON’T use liquids. However, if the card is recording any pictures then it probably is not dirty.

There are a lot of possibilities to explore before taking this next step. But if you are in a hurry, try reformatting the card from within the camera routines.

It would be quicker to talk about the possibilities and potential steps. Email your phone # to me or call me if you want to talk some options. (801) 967-7696 time zone here is Mountain Standard. I’m not an expert on this stuff but I didn’t fall off the pumpkin tuck last night either.

Here is a deal on a 23 in 1 USB card reader http://www.eforcity.com/phubcrdrxx01.html

for $10 & free shipping. I am not sure if the code still works but this should allow a $6 rebate (so $4) Use checkout code OFF998.

  • Funny you should post this, I have an Olympus D-390 sitting on my desk right now... right beside the Cannon SD1000 I replaced it with. My Olympus has been demoted to "jeep camera" status, I can leave it in the jeep center console and not care if someone makes off with it but I stil have a decent camera if I see the Loch Ness monster making out with Bigfoot or something. It has been having some similar problems lately, mostly me screwing up something in the menu settings. It also eats batteries like they were ABTs or something. Do yourself a favor and pick up and a Cannon SD1000 or similar, you will be blown away by the small size, image quality, and battery life. Plus they use generic sd cards rather than those expensive xd cards. The sd1000 is usually available on sale for $150.00 or less.

If all else fails send me your card and I will recover the pictures on it and put on a disc for you if they are important.
