Turkey on a Small BGE

I want to cook a turkey (not just the turkey breast) on my small BGE. About how big of a bird can I get in a small using a platesetter and drip pan? Any advice from someone who has done this would be appreciated.

My best guess would be big kaypon chicken??? ,I have a small also ,your biggest way would be to not use the grill put a drip pan on plate setter ,let us know how you turn out

This link is for the BGE Canada web site. The chart at the bottom has max turkey sizes. I know that the Large and XL capacities are safe.

The BGE HQ site has some sizes of turkey's for the different size eggs - 12# for small.
I think you could expand the size somewhat by removing the dome thermometer and putting the clip on the outside of the dome (or someother type of spacer IE. spool of thread, toy wood wheel, cork etc.
Inverted plate setter, some spacers for drip pan then the grid. Then take a tape measure and get your width and the height from the grid to about 1" under the dome therm hole. Take the tape measure when finding a bird.
I was able to get a bird 4# bigger than BGE HQ suggested for my large. BGE says 20# for the large I got a 24# and it fit. This cook I removed the dome therm all together and use the maverick ET-73.

I fit a 13# on my medium. Too much bigger would be tight fit.

We did a turkey on our small and like AAIND stated, we had to remove the grid. The platesetter was inserted, legs up, and brass fittings were placed on top of the plate area to provide a space under the pan. We also had to pull the thermometer so far out as to render it useless. I don't remember the weight of the bird. but it was real small for a turkey. Everyone devoured it in short order (partly because it was so tiny) and I took my now usual bows for the meal.

I don't know where you live but around here a capon weighing just 7 pounds costs $30. You can buy a lot of turkey for $30!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

If you lay it down in the drip pan you be be able to a 12-13 ponder in there okay. I place the bird on top of a bed of celery, oranges, apples, onion and corrots to keep it off the bottom of the pan.

Hi, Camping last summer we got a 13+ pounder on our small with some adjustments. Like they have said, had to pull about half way out with the thermometer and plate setter legs up, we put some small flat shale pieces under the pan if I remember right for a small air space. I think I did some serous pushing down on the top of the bird too with the flat of my hands. It was heavenly! had a dutch oven with peach cobbler that went on after the turkey came out. I was sicker than a dog and it pretty much cooked it's self. every one wanted to keep checking it and i would holler back what is the temp? NO don't touch it. they wanted to baste it and check it. I think they thought I had had to much nyquil
they have asked if we are bring it to the family reunion next month
