Ancho Chili Powder Question/Problem
Grandpas Grub
Posts: 14,226
I am trying to find Ancho chili powder and have absolutely no luck at all…
I did pick up some Ancho Chili Pods, these are dried and black. Bolner’s Fiesta, Extra Fancy Ancho Chili Pods.
Is there any way to make the chili powder out of the pods?
It was suggested to substitute McCormick – Hot Mexican-Style Chili Powder, anybody know if this is anything like the Ancho?
Supposed to snow in the next couple of days and I am wanting to try some of egret’s chile.
Thanks in advance.
Grandpas Grub – all dressed up and ready to cook and no Ancho around here.

You can do it, but its a lot easier to just buy it. Most stores carry it now, but I guess not in your area. I would go with regular chile powder, I don't think there would be that much difference. -RP

shoot i would just take as many seeds out as possiblt and placein a blender... if it needs some i would add some hot water and just make a paste out of it... sounds right to mer but i may be speaking out of turn
happy eggin

I tear them into strips then let them steep in hot chicken broth until they are soft. Then blend them adding just enough of the broth to keep them blending. You're right about removing all the seeds, they are bitter. -RP

The recipe calls for 1 Tsb. Any guess to how many whole chillies to use? The dried ones I have are 5 to 6 inches long and 3 to 4 inches wide.

Hey Kent,
It probably won't take more than one ancho made into a paste. Or, you can substitute 1 T. of chile powder as Randy stated......Use one of the anchos to float on top as it is simmering and you'll get some of the flavor. You could scrape out the flesh from the ancho after it simmers for a while, too. -
Just seed the ancho pods and run them thru an old coffee, or spice grinder.
As for substitutions....you can, but traditional "Chili Powder" is not at all like ground Ancho Chilis.
Chili Powder is commonly contains several different chilis..garlic, cumin, mexican oregano.., maybe some salt...ect!
Ancho Powder is sweeter with much better depth, and a purer chili flavor!

How quickly do you need it? I would be happy to send you a bottle. I have one at home that is unopened.

Try Penzeys. They have all kinds of chili powder.

Thanks John,
I want to keep as close to the original as possible on this first try. If it turns out like everyone says, I have a special plan for a huge batch.
Every other week for the next while Shelagh and a I are planning a dinner/get together for her sister's husband, the kids and some of their close frends. These meals, pulled pork on Wednesday, and hopefully your chili then next Wednesday, hopefully this will keep him connected with these folks and provied some closer 'together' time for a while.
I appreciate your help with this.

Hey thanks Chubby, I am going to give that a try in a few minutes.
I was going to wait and ship some powder in but I want to give this a try.
Almost forgot, I've been wanting to ask you something. Are those 'chubby' soft drinks real, that is do they exist and can I buy some and get them shipped?
I need to get some for a trick on the younger grandkids. I plant magic corn, about 20 or 30 stocks and that darn corn yields all kinds of things, strawberried, pinapple, watermellon, popcorn (in the bag) almost anything. The older grandkids think I am nuts but the 5 and younger kids think their grandpa is magic.

Fidel, thanks man, I will be more than happy to pay you for it and shipping, just let me know.
I will shoot you an email right now.

I got your email. It will be in the mail tomorrow.
You should get it by Friday at the latest. -
Thanks for the help.

Mc Cormick does make it and you will find it at the grocery store in the glass jars.Penzey has a far better price for 8oz or more.Bobby Flay got me on that stuff and I love it and I buy it in 16oz containers.

Had very good luck with these people shopping on line and going out to the store in Turuo on the Cape.

Depending on where you are, you may be able to call your local grocier and get some to you if they carry them as a company!
Depending on how much you want...I could purchace, and ship it to you from here...(Texas), but it can get pricey in large amounts!

Darnoc,
I tried Wallmart, and several large chains as well as 3 samller local stores and one resturant food supply - with no luck.
Fidel is going to send me a bottle and we will go from there.
Thank you, Kent -
Thanks Chubby,
Just checked the link and there are hopefully 3 stores that I should be able to find it.
Great fun...

I did purchase mine from a restaurant supply house and they stopped carrying it.I had to make a 150 mile run to pick it up then called McCormick and found out Food Lion in my area carries it.I would suggest giving them a call and find out who in your area might have it.But on the other hand what Penzey Spice charges for it is the same cost or cheaper than from a food distributor.
16 oz $10.20
8 oz $5.69
Good luck this should help you out. -
Check on Amazon.com. There are several brands listed at goo prices.
