I have only had one but I did not "burp" the egg long enough.

Only when the eggs at super temps and I forget to burp it before I open it all the way. Don't be scared...that arm hair doesn't do ya any good anyway.

If you remember to burp your egg when you open it you will keep that from happening. I always use a fireproof glove when opening the egg at high temps. Just incase. I haven't had any issues though. :woohoo:

It is something to be concerned about. I haven't had one in quite a while. I notice it when I have fresh lump in and doing a high temp cook. Never experienced one at 250 dome yet, and never with lump that has been through a few cooks.

Only if you are not careful.
High temp in the egg with a lot of smoke. If the egg is not burped the oxygen will rush in and ignite the smoke and whoosh there is a flashback.
By opening the upper vent and lower vent all the way will clear out the volital smoke.
I have not had a flashback when the dome temp is 550° or below. The only time I have had a flashback (or several) is when I had the dome at 700° and didn't burp the egg.
It was a shock and after that I never again forgot to burp the egg. Personally I don't worry about it. I am always mindful about the possibility of lashback and I follow the instructions.
If you have ever had flare up in a gas grill when the lid was opened it is something like that.
I bought a pair of welders gloves but I don't use them much.
When I sear (want a very high temp cook) I use an accessory called a spider which lowers the cooking area close to the lump. I get just as high a sear but I don't worry about having to have the egg temp all that hot inside.
Don't let this scare you from getting an egg.

Not if you remember to open up the vents before you open the lid. But they can happen at most any temperature above 300 degrees if the conditions are right (as I explain on the web page). Smoke has nothing to do with it. I couldn't get a flashback to occur with lots of smoke in the cooker. It's carbon monoxide and other flammable gases that build up and cause the problem. I don't recommend burping because that can damage gaskets. I recommend opening the bottom and top vents to let oxygen in, and then slowly opening the lid.
But you shouldn't be too worried. I've been on this forum now for almost 7 years, and not once have I seen a post from anyone stating that they got anything more dmaaging than singed arm hair from a flashback. Be careful and you don't have to worry. Good luck with your purchase plans!

they are usually caused by alcohol. when it's in yer blood, i mean.
no big deal. flame isn't hot, actually. just hot enough to denude your arm and anything else hairy and exposed.
i'm not kidding... my eyelashes have yet to grow back. didn't hurt any, i just smelled like burning hair for an evening.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -

I guess I should have been more careful with my post... where there is smoke there is CO, however, CO does not require smoke to be present.
I use a lot of flavor wood and when at higher temps I can almost always get a flashback if the vents are somewhat closed. I open the dome, there is smoke and when the 'poof' comes the smoke is now clear, and the flame rushes out to the free oxygen.
If my egg is hot I do open the vents, however, I don't just pull the dome open, I open about an inch or so and a few seconds later I to continue to open up the egg. I don't open/close/open the dome though.
Neverthess, you have much more experience and testing on this and many other subjecs. TNW site is always the a great first 'go to site.

My Mom is terrified of Gas stoves, or gas being left on and Ka-BOOM, I am terrified of Gas Grills for different reasons :laugh: from my previously dull foods produced. In the Big Green Egg DVD they show you how to burp the egg so you minimize the chance of Flashback.. One time I let my egg go nuclear and I singed off my hair off my arm opening but that was due to ooperator error. My wife will start the eggs for me and I have told her to burp them and she does. Respect the egg and it will respect you

No they don't happen a lot. Especially if you don't cook over 600.
My experience is the same as I think Mike posted.
Full load of new lump, especially if there is charcoal dust in with the lump (like you get at the bottom of the bag.) and/or temps over 600.
I do like the Whiz and open top and bottom vents all the way before opening the dome when I think there's a chance of FB. Often they are already open all the way, in which case I burp it.
Even though it may damage the gasket, I often burp the Egg before opening. Heat and/or Flame can shoot out when you do this and can singe your knuckle hairs, so gloves are a good idea.
I always recommend a pair of welders gloves as a necessary Eggcessory anyway. You can use them while cooking ribbeyes over high heat and the fat is flaming up, or to burp and open your Egg when it's at a high temperature and might flashback, or to remove a hot platesetter, etc. -
Hey GG! The smoke thing was one of the things I specifically tested when I made the now-famous (LOL) flashback movie. I could not get a flashback to occur with old lump and tons of smoke. So, I don't think smoke has anything to do with flashback, other than where's there is smoke, there is fire. There were discussions years ago that assumed that grain silo explosions due to dust proved that smoke itself will cause flashbacks. But like I said, I had a cooker at 700 degrees, I tossed in smoking chips, closed the vents, waited 3 minutes or so, opened the cooker and.......nothing. Everyone in the audience (all 3 of them) were very disappointed. :-)The Naked Whiz

I've had my eggs quite a while and have only had one flashback. It was on my mini, I had crammed a turkey breast (and I mean crammed!) in it. The turkey breast was sitting in a little aluminum pan with logs of aluminum foil. Anyway, I was messing with it and dumped a whole pan of turkey grease onto the coals. Flames were going everwhere and I opened it up to get the turkey breast out and you know that mini whomped at me. I had Lodge dutch oven gloves on and didn't loose any hair.
Other than that one time, I have been really careful. I always burp and open vents and the DFMT, before opening it.
I figure it's no worse than knowing how to light a gasser. If you don't light a gasser right bad things can happen too, but if you are careful things are generally OK.
