Thinking about a EGG

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
Hello every one.
My name is Greg Nettles (Atlanta)

I have been thinking about getting a egg to go with my Webber, mainly for BBQ and Pizza.
The Webber is great with steaks, BBQ, not so much, and Pizza on the Webber looks like somebody took a cutting torch to the crust.
Yea, a bit hot. :)

We have decided on a large or a XL, but we are not sure about the table.
Some one gave us a small, but it needs more parts than it is worth to fix, and it is to small.

We always cook with lump, so we are used to that part of it.
We also have a old Brinkman smoker, that I am not real crazy about.

One thing I do love about the Webber is the gas starter for the charcoal, turn it on and five minutes later you have a fire built.

Has anybody ever modded a egg to have a gas starter?

I know asking what you guys here at the egg forum what you think about them is going to go ever with predictable results.

Do you folks think I will find a need for both of them, or will one just gather dust?

BTW, I tried to register, but I did not have much luck with that.

I don't know of any way to modify one for gas and really don't need it. I use Mapp gas and it only takes a few minutes. You are correct in your assumptions about the responces, just keep watching and you will see what I mean.

As for needing to go along with your webber...I promise you will not really want to even use it after you get the hang of using your egg. The food is really that much better. You just can't keep foods as moist and juicy in the weber as in the egg. Don't misundertake me  weber makes a great product and I have a mini weber to take camping, but it's just not the same animal.

Keep us posted with lots of pics after you get your egg, we'll be proud to call you a fellow cult member

I have the same three grills and haven't used the other two since I got the egg. The egg is so much better for BBQ than the Brinkman but that was not a surprise. I was also concerned about losing the gas start. The weber is very easy to make a consistent fire and be cooking in 10 -15 minutes. I bought a weed burner and my wife bought me an electric charcoal starter. The weed burner is a little scary. With the electric starter I leave it on for 10 minutes in 10 minutes I am about up to temp and ten minutes later I start cooking. Slower than the weber but predictable. Alot of people here use a MAPP torch. I am happy with the electric starter. And when I pull it out it cools down in the weber.

I have 3 Webers and only use the 14" for fast grilling for my wife and I. The 18" I've had for 2 years and it's still new looking. Hardly used. The 3rd is a WSM I bought last June and that only was used a few times. I wish I saved that money and put it aside for a BGE. I have an ancient large egg and need to get another one. I have to wait awhile since a new water heater scalped my finances.

i went from a kettle to an egg. easy transition. keep the bottle and regulator to use on a single outdoor burner and get a weedburner from harbor freight (cheap 20 dollar unit) for startups. i still have the old kettle at camp sitting next to an egg, but dont use it unless there are a lot of guests. kettle is good, egg is much better. i had a little bit of a hard time getting chicken parts as good as i could with the kettle, but thats all changed now.

    Greg,

I'm coming off using what sounds like the very same Weber you have. It has the small propane tank to ignite the charcoal and it's all built into an aluminum table. I loved that grill for several years, until. . .

    I saw the Egg.

I've had the large Egg now for about a month. I have no regrets whatsoever. And I would wager a bet that if you did get one, you may never fire up the Weber again. It sounds like you understand that the Egg is much better for BBQing. But once you do a steak on the egg, I doubt you'll ever go back to the Weber.

I still have my old Weber. Once I get finished builng my table for the Egg, I'm going to see if there's a way I can adapt the propane burner for the Egg. Even if there's not, lighting the Egg has not been a big deal at all.

Last and not least, the community here in the Egg Cult is another bonus. There's a wealth of information out here.

i have two large and a mini. i don't see a need for any other type of cooker, although i still have a gasser that is very seldom, if ever, used now.

i believe the kamado brand of ceramic cooker has a gas starter as an option. i never thought i had the need to go that route though. i mostly use a mapp torch to start my eggs and have a well established fire with in 10 - 15 minutes.

    good luck

    Greg,
You'll need your Weber after you get an EGG........You'll need it to hold your eggcessories cause you will hardly ever fire it up again.Weren't you the third baseman for the Yankees???
  • Thanks every one for your input, I am going to go ahead and pull the trigger on one in the next few weeks.

I does come as a bit of a surprise that some of you never use your Webber any more, I might be in the same group after a while.

I am not the baseball player, just a poor old country mechanic.

KillFloorBulldog - I love the Pulp Fiction tag line! That whole piece of dialogue about how Jules "ain't diggin' on no swine" is priceless. Especially the line about "Sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I'd never know 'cause I wouldn't eat the filthy . . ."
  • Hehe..."Ah, so by that rationale, if a pig had a better personality, he would cease to be a filthy animal. Is that true?"

    Hi Bill

We may get rid if it after we purchase and use the big one for a while.
If so you have first dib's on it. :)

It looks like it is going to need everything but the shell, no hinge, handle, seal, no damper at the bottom, firebox trashed, but It does have a working thermometer.

    Good one.
My better half uses a gas grill and for the life of me I do not understand why, all she is doing is moving the stove top outside.

I have a gas modification on my Eggs. It's called a MAPP torch :P

I am as serious as I can be. 30 second here 30 second there and in 10-20 minutes I am up and cooking. Whilst the egg is coming to temp I am prepping the food.

More then one person here has a Weed Burner to start their egg. Bit of an over kill for me, but you know men and their toys..

BTW: Get the large. XL is nice if you are planing on catering.. The large is more fuel efficient and with all the eggessories for the large I can feed an army.

I am going to do just that June 19th, except they will be Marines. :woohoo:

Hey Greg, welcome to the club.I got my first egg in June 2004 and havn't looked back since.I kept my gas grill for a few months, but never used it again. Then in December of 2004,I received a gift card for the egg store and got a second egg.Recently,I got a great deal on a slightly used XL.Listen to Celtic Wolf and get the large. If it turns out to be to small for you,i'll trade you my XL for it.I would probably love the XL if it were my first egg,but I got a medium first, then a small. This was a perfect set-up for my small family. The XL is just sooooo big,I can't afford to fill it with meat.

Tell them thank you for there service.

With my old Webber Kettle's that I had before the one with the propane charcoal starter I used to go through a bunch of charcoal, now not so much because I just relight it.
I never did that with the other grills.

Yea, I know about toys, some of my favorite things (sounds of a supercharged motor in my head)

    Hi Doug

That is a nice set up you have there!!
I am not sure if I will get the Large or the extra large, but after what I have read here I will probably get the large.
I need to look at them again.

I never understood the gas grills, I have never owned one, the better half has, but they always seem to be like cooking indoors.

    Greg,
Now that you are a registered user you can email other members and you could go and look at members profiles. Send me an email with your number and we can talk egg.

Everyone has given you great info and it sounds like you have made the decision to buy a large. You won't regret it. I have really enjoyed my egg, cooked some fabulous food, and met some really wonderful people all along the way. There is a learning curve to owning and cooking on the egg, however the forum helps speed you to a higher level faster than I would have ever gotten if I didn't have the forum giving me tips.

Haven't had any of the automotive type toys in a long time. Probably won't again 'till I get a few of these college loans paid off.
