Hello,
Jut bought a large BGE, was going to build a table, but decided to just use the nest for the time being.
My question is this, are the eggmate shelves sturdy? do they sag over time? pretty heavy duty steel, same as band?
Thanks, and by the way..............
I have already cooked 2 chickens, 1 rib roast, and 2 pizzas all to perfection thanks to everyones help here!! And we have only had the egg since wednesday.

Welcome, glad to see you off to a good start. Don't know about the shelf mates. Sorry.

Hey John----
Welcome to the cult! Congats on ur new egg, sounds like ur off to a good start. Bag the egg mate idea, unless you just don't have room for a table. Plenty of info on this site to build your own
get nuts with it (the table) as you will use it more and more and more and.........
The key is plenty of storage space (eggcesories) and prep space. Good luck and let us know what you figure out!

I got them on my new med. egg. Cause I ain't no carpenter and I will look for some type of table. The wood on the mates will need some type of sealer. Appears to be a type of soft wood. However if I don't seal them they will get cooking (battle scars) . What do I want ???Our large has lots O scars. Kinda like em. Many good cooks toward you. Miles

I got the mates on my large and I like them. I built a table for the medium and the nest for the small.
I really AZRP's set up. He has all his eggs in nests and then I think two tables he uses. Possibly he will jump in and repost his picture.
I think I am going to get a nest for the medium and re-do the table with a hole in it to a solid table.

Hi John,
Welcome and Congrats on your new Egg.
I have the mates and like them very much, the ones on my large are a year old and no problems. I bought two bamboo cutting boards at Publix that were larger than the orginal boards, took off the old and screwed the cutting boards to the mate frame and increased the size 4" one way and 3" the other.

I have the mates on my large..small is nest only. I have had no problem with the mates and am too lazy to build a table for now...as for strength, i wouldnt sit on them, but have had a heavy CI dutch oven full of beans on them and no problem, so pretty sturdy. Welcome to the community!

I used the mates for about four years before I built my table. They have very good support, but tend to shift laterally if the screws holding the boards are not tight.
I used my egg a lot during those years, but always kept it covered when not in use.
The table gives a lot more space and flexibility. It is the best option in my opinion unless space is a concern. -
I like the mates, they are plenty sturdy. -RP

Welcome John! I'm new here too - had my egg about a month now. I went out this weekend and bought the wood I'm going to need to build the table featured on the NakedWhiz site. I'm no carpenter either, but I feel compelled to build one of these things. Since the Whiz has been so generous to post all the pics, and the detailed plans that makes the decision to build the thing a lot easier.
Right now I'm obsessing over building the table as much as I am cooking on the Egg. . Where will this all end??? -
I was going to build a table for my medium egg then decided to get a nest instead. The nest allows me to easily move it around the patio to avoid wind (South Dakota). It also allows me to push it near the house when not in use. The nest isn't very sexy but very practical when dealing with weather and wind.
