BGE & Salt Air...Rust???
vidalia1
Posts: 7,092
I have a friend who is visiting me this weekend. He lives at the Jersey shore. He loves my BGE and wants to get one but he is afraid the metal band and bolts for the hinge will rust since he lives right on the water. He has an out grill area and his gassers have completely rusted out on him.
Does anyone who lives around salt water ever have this problem? I appreciate any input on this subject.

Four years on the CA coast and no rust yet, but I keep them covered with the BGE covers.

I live close to the Gulf here in FL but have only had my EGG for about 3 months. So far, so good, although I have to keep my tools inside where the a/c is running. If he's that vulnerable, CRC has some great rust/corrosion inhibitor produts specifically made for marine use. Used to use a similar product called "Paralketone" on seaplanes.

I live one mile off the St. Lucie River here in Ft. Pierce, Florida.....and our salt water and air is just as salty as your friend's in New Jersey.....I've had my eggs for 3 years now....and no rust issues whatsoever.....I do keep them covered with a BGE Cover....and that's it....So no...the air and water ain't any saltier in NJ......But you know what they say....everything's better up north....right? LOL

Just a funny aside...because we have so many NY transplants here in our area....A local electronics store has a big sign in their showroom....It has an official "I-95 Sign" and underneath it reads...."New York City..1250 Miles...and we don't care how they do it there" -
I live a hundred yards from Lake Pontchartrain and have had a XL for two and a half years and a small for over a year and no problems - The XL was a deal from my dealer up the street, as it went (and was flooded) through Katrina waters anb STILL no rust!

I live a few miles from Cape Cod and Narragansett Bay so the air here isn't salty. I've had Eggie for ten years now and each spring I take a can of WD-40 and hit the nuts and any exposed metal (bands etc.) with a light mist. I keep Egg covered and theres no sign of rust at all.
Used to be a guy on the forum named Tim M and he lives on the Outer Banks. Last I heard his Eggs and his 'other" ceramic cooker hadn't rusted at all. -
My friend builds them into charter fishing boats on the Gulf Coast. The" Sea Reaper" is a 65'
custom made fishing boat with a 18' X 22' back deck. Along with a large built in BGE they have a fully operational Tiki bar. They fire up the Egg in the morning and cook breakfast, then contiune to cook for thier guests all day long
Many guests end up buying an egg after thier experiance on the Sea Reaper and other charter boats out of the Mobile area. -
My egg is 10 years old and 40 miles inland. The bolts look like brand new but the bands, intake and daisy wheels have rust. It wouldn't keep me from buying one.
I sure wish the replacement spring-loaded bands were cheaper.
FWIW, There are other ceramic cookers with stainless hardware. -
I live on Cape Cod and have no issues in 5 yrs. Your friend can use BGE covers and hose them off occasionally for peace of mind
