I've had a large BGE for home cooking for over a year and absolutely love it and cook on it often. Now, I want to take something on the road with me when I camp, go on hunting trips, etc. Thinking of buying a small just for that purpose.
Any tips to not breaking the thing when travelling?

You could roll it up in your sleeping bags and then pack it nice and snug.

the small travels easily. i put it in a trash bag and tuck the gathered end into the chimney, and put the cap on top. no rattling.
if i need to put it in the trunk of the sedan, i clean it out, put it all back together, and lay it down, immobilized.
it's only 65 pounds i think, but a little bulky to carry. carefuled egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
When I take mine with me,I just take out the inards and wrap them in blankets and put them back in.Wrap them so they can't move around or touch eachother.I've never had anything break in transport. :woohoo:

i don't have a picture of it but i just put in in the rear passenger seat with a seat belt on mine... you will love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We got our second egg, a small just for that reason. packs right up and goes. We built a carrier for it so it sits in it for transporting and then flips and makes a base for the egg when we set up camp. It was someone here on the egg forum that showed us how t do it. I thought had a picture of it but i don't maybe someone will post one. Was it City Chicken?

WessB has made up a nice carrier and has info here on his web site:

That's such a good idea that now I may have to go out and get a small!

Another idea might be to make the hole slightly larger and attach some woodstove gasket material to the inside of the hole. That might minimize rattle, provide extra cushion, prevent any chipping and solve the heat issue.

That will make a good project one afternoon.
