Lent is all about giving up something. Sacrificing so to speak. So what is your friend giving up for lent?

Otherwise most foods are prepared the same way. Though I always liked Hot Cross Buns :)

Sorry for the confusion. My friend has given up chocolate. What I meant to say is are there any good recipes that calls for no red meats. They are nor crazy about fish either.

some up here give up meat on fridays during lent, you could make this layered as a casserole without the chourico if thats the case. recipe is in there someplace and go light on the allspice if you are not used to it. thick and served on good bread is the way to go

you want a couple types of fish for the different textures. haddock, cod, pollock, halibut, flounder, sole all work well

  • Since we is goin all religious an whatnot...

I had me a grate uncle what was a preest. He hadda big jug what he farted into for somethin like a year..an then at won of our family gatherins at his cottage..he pulled the cork out and had my gramma smell it. I seen my gramma eat all kinda strange things in mine life..but that's the only time I ever done seen her throw up..usually when folks throw up..nobody is laffin none..cept that day...it sure was funny i guess...but for somethin like a year all i had in mine mind is mine uncle the preest stickin that jug up to his big ole behine and lettin the air biskits in...i'm thinkin maybe what my gramma smelt was not so much an air bisket...or even a collekshun of air biskits...but i'm guessin the very rim of that there jug was prolly tainted somethin fierce..I didn't get reel close to it none..but i'm guessin it prolly done lookt like it was dipped in high fructose corn syrup and dragged threw some cocoa powder or somethin...that's shagnasty rite there..there's a dog gonned good reason hot air rises and men folks have big ole butt cracks inna back to sorta gide hot air..and our noses is inna front..perfict..but women folks is difrent..them gotta be careful cuz they got somethin inna front AND inna back what can gide their air biskits..i think maybe thats why they dont go off an fart as much as us men folks doo..cuz ifn they aint careful..them air biskist wood be guided up inna fronta them..rite at their noses..then theyd smell it somethin awful..i dont know..but i think maybe whoever invented women folks made a mistake or somethin...

Ahhhh now you are making since. I assume your friends are Catholic and choose to avoid meat during lent. Poultry in this case is considered meat; however, some practicing Catholic will eat poultry. This has to do with the belief that birds ascended from the water.

If your friends don't eat fish your kind of stuck if they aren't amongst those eating Poultry.

it's not any meat, it was more accurately red meat. but there never really was a 'rule' per se. in a time when red meat was an extravagance, to not have it was seen as a sacrifice. the idea wasn't that red meat was bad, it's just it was the most expensive thing, and given up as a token of sacrifice. on sunday, in celebration, they would go ahead and partake again.

for example, if a follower believed they shouldn't have red meat on friday, being true to the spirit of the whole thing, they would also not have lobster, or a big pork roast, or some other "fancy" dinner.

over time, people simplified it to "no (red) meat on fridays. and as long as they avoided beef, they felt they had a holy "get out of jail card", and were free to indulge otherwise. not so (if you are a believer). many people who practice it have no idea why, but that's like a lot of things religious!

the "eat fish on friday" thing grew out of the tradition of 'well, if we can't eat meat, let
's eat fish". further legend has it that the catholic church made it an unofficial 'rule' during a time when the italian fisherman were suffering, and it bolstered the fishing industry.

many folks will raise a hue and cry if they see you eating red meat on a friday around here. 9 out of 10, though, can't tell you why they don't other than "we're not supposed to"....

last time i checked into this, you could actually eat meat on friday as far as "the church" was concerned. but you should still observe some form of sacrifice on friday. a catholic could eat a rare ny strip steak, and refrain from a nice glass of scotch or red wine, and have met the spitirt of the 'rule'.

Yeah... my recommendation doesn’t work if you gave up meat entirely for Lent. I was more thinking of the no meat on Fridays aspect. It was just a joke anyway… no disrespect intended.

during lent you fast, but on ash wednesday and good friday you fast and abstain. fasting allows 2 small meals and one large meal, abstaining means no meat or poultry, fish not being meat. drinking is allowed in fact from my catholic school days before these rescent laws came into effect fasting meant no food during the day during lent, but as soon as the sun went down you were to celebrate eat and drink, thats how those guys in the old testiment fasted for 30 years and survived. now if i got that wrong i hafta watch out for the thunderbolts

Ahhhh yes the new catholic church.

    Fast of Lent

It is now and has always been ANY CREATURE that has life. Which by the way includes fish. However, that Catholic Church relaxed the rules to exclude any life born from water.

Sometime in the 60's they relaxed the rules again and only required this fast on high holy holidays, of which Lent is amongst the holiest.

There has always been a clause that states Catholics can at their discretion still follow the old rules.

I may be a Spiritualist friend stike, but I was raised old school Catholic.

that thing is so confusing, it's no wonder catholics have no idea why they can and can't do stuff.

my son goes to CCD... he pointed to the latin inscription above the altar and asked the priest what it meant in english. the priest of 30 years, 20+ in that very church) had no idea. i'm not sure he'd be much help explaining the "fasting" thing, either.

whatever the specifics of the lenten fast rule, and fasting in general, i guess my point was that the vast majority of people practicing it have no idea why, or what it means. the idea of "sacrifice" barely entering into it.

i find it funny someone would say "sorry, i can't eat that nice meal of beef. though i'm just not sure why"

i admire anyone who has a deep religious belief, and practices it. i admire them even more when they do it out of choice, rather than habit.
