Would this device be useful for cooking on the BGE?
It has range of -76 to over 1500 degree F. I'm thinking it might be useful for grill surface temperatures.

It would be even more useful for measuring the surface temp of your pizza stone when doing pizzas. If you could find the "happy" stone temp for your particular dough, you could have very repeatable results I would think.

For grill surface temp, I think a regular ole thermocouple wire (like what comes with a Guru) is a much cheaper alternative. Even the temp probe from a $25 digital meat thermo would work for low 'n slows.

Forget "useful" though - these pyrometers are a lotta fun!

Yeah, it can be really useful. Hatch brings his sometimes, and we have used it to check the difference from one side of the cooker to the other, as well as to check the surface temps of the meat. And like TRex sez, they are just fun.

    Cheers!

I agree with both you and Trex...poor choice of words on my part. Please change useful to fun!
  • Our foundrymen used similar devices to determine when to add phosphate and magnesium to molten iron to make nodular iron. They would measure (quite accurately) up around 2700° F. Talk about the tRex method!

I think it is a expensive play toy to use for cooking. It's kinda neat when you stick your hand out nside and get a quick temperature reading when it is 10 degrees or 100 plus or a quick check inside your freezer door. But I have not found it useful to check temperatures on the egg because you can not aim the IR down the dome to read what is going on (it might melt the sensor)and if you lift the dome to check inside you might as well use a Polder, then there will be no need to lift the dome in the first place and let the heat escape.

May the lump stay hot and not go out.

  • I used one on the wife (yes, the wife who.....) to measure the skin temp of her hands. She complains all winter long about cold hands. Well, now we know. My hands read about 93 degrees. Hers read about 83 degrees. So I guess she wasn't just whinin' all that time!

  • Oh I passed the test, but the man what makes the "decisions" is on a family vacation for a week, so even though I passed the first assignment, a questionnaire that took me hours and five pages of typing, and I passed the first interview with one of the founders, a second interview with 2 project managers, PLUS I passed the 8-9 page desertation on "How to test Google", AND they checked all my references, which all gave me raving reviews (according to them not me), I still have to wait for this guy to come back. Personally, I hope one of these other companies make me and offer before he comes back, and THEN they make me an offer that I can decline. At this point I'm not so sure I wanna work for them after all that. All that work for them, and I'm still waiting. Almost every other day I get an email from the headhunter about how they really want me..yada..yada...yada..

**** or get off the pot my gramma used to say!

I have 2 other things going on that are close. Yesterday I got a call from the HR women at one rather large company and she asked me not to sign any papers until she gets back to me, so that sounds good. I hate looking for jobs, my friggen neck is so big I have to wear special shirts. Last time on the way to the interview I spilled coffee in my light colored pants, looked all together turdish. I hid it, but I'm pretty sure if I farted the jig would be up. Anyway that's where it stands, for good or bad. I've never been out of work a single day since I turned 15, now I find myself on unemployment that I had to fight the state to get, and even now it's not consistent. Last weeks check was half of what I expected, they could not even tell me why so they just sent the rest later. I called someone and switched to be able to go online for weekly checks vs. bi-weekly. I told the person that I still had 2 weeks worth of "hard cards" in the mail from the last 2 weeks unemployment. She said no problem and set me up to do online instead of cards through the mail. I waited three weeks to login, as she told me too because the cards in the mail covered the previous 2 weeks, but when I tried to put in for unemployment my account was closed. I called them and waited on hold for 30 minutes. I finally got a real nice person who told me that when they switched me to go online instead of the cards they should have manually put me in for the two weeks the card covered. Since they didn't, the cards came in and bounced and shut my account down. So, three weeks pay took six weeks to get to me. That's the state of Massachusetts for you.

The worst thing is, when I first signed up for unemployment they immediately sent me a check, three weeks later I get a letter in the mail saying i was denied unemployment and they were going to start charging me interest on the check they sent me until they got it back. I called three times to get an address to send the check to, nobody could give me one and said we'd worry about that later. huh?

I think the state is run by AssMonkeys. The worst kind too, AssMonkeys what can't count.

  • Only if you had a solid (as in unbroken) surface would it be useful. TRex measuring his pizza stone temp is a good example, measuring the grate temp is not. Plus, these guns assume a certain emissivity of your target that may be fairly close for meat or the stone, but not for things like shiny pans.

It's a ballpark instrument...I'd get a thermocouple meter with a good, stout industrial probe first.
  • I have the 3M IR-60L2 Infrared Thermometer. It is a fun toy for a while, but I wouldn't say it is all that useful for this application.
