Found these today. The package says to make a pouch out of tin foil then put it in the fire. Think theese things can go right in the fire or should I follow the package directions. Doing 2 salbs of spare ribs for the SB tomorrow.

Follow directions for pouch, then put directly on hot lump coals. I used Jack Daniels pellet last nite on a brisket smoke and it was really good.

I've used these and would also recommend following the foil packet directions. I have also purchased and used the cast iron container that they sell..which also works.
However, I used this method 'pre-egg' days. Now I prefer using chunks and chips. I believe it smokes and pellets. Also, you can disperse wood through out the lump to smoke at different times during the cook. Once the foil is done its done. Also...if the foil gets too hot the stuff catches on fire and you get very little smoke.

Not trying to be a smart a--. but what would the advantage be of buying pellets vs. wood chips or chunks?
More smoke/less smoke? Less flame/more flame?
I know that there are folks here that have pellet smokers; maybe they can chime in.
Thanks

Hammer,
I first used these with a gas grill. Basically an effective way of flavoring your food in that environment. However, you're right. No need for pellets with the egg and a good chunk of apple wood. -
I would prefer chunks too. All I can find now are chunks of mesquite and I wanted to try some of the fruit woods. I also bought some cherry chips and my inlaws have a bunch of grapevine I'm going to try. There are lots of apple and cherry orchards here in MI, come spring I'll start looking for large chunks there. For now I'm trying lots of stuff and having a great time doing it.

Try your local big box stores like Lowes/Home Depot/Pro Bass etc;.. They generally carry these type products.

Thanks Bente; but the real facts of it is that somewhere in cyber space is that I have between 1,500/2,000 posts that haven't transferred for some reason.
Wmk is aware of the problem and has told me that once the smoke clears that he would address the issue.
Again thanks for your recognition.

Know the feeling. I went from "Richard" to "Richard Fl" about 6 months ago after 5 years and am still around. just got the last 4 years lost. Wish I could do that with my age. hehe!

Where do you get chunks of fruit woods?
I have only been able to find chunks of mesquite or hickory @ BBQ Galore.

I have used the pellets in my egg and gas grill. They are definitely the best way to produce smoke flavor on a gas grill, but they work well with the egg, too. On the gas grill, just wrap them in foil, make afew holes, and put the foil on the grate. With the egg, get the little cast iron bucket and put it right on the coals.

I was in a new grill Shop in Englewood Fl last week and they had a buffet of serve yourself chunks and chips! There was a scale and big bags and little bags to serve yourself. There was maybe 10 or 12 different kinds and sizes, very cool! I saw the pellets there and thought they were interesting. but love the apple wood off the old trees in our back yard. Julie

Here it goes! My 1,000th. post according to the new forum.
WMK is trying to find my other 1,500/2000 posts that are in cyber space. Platinum Egger? Long ago; but then who's counting?
Hammer -
congrats!
from what i understand, you've been around longer than i have here, but just dropped out for a few years. i have a high post count, but i think it's ony because i (and a few others like RRP) signed up here maybe a year ago when it was infra-beta.... and so we have maybe 12, 16 months of posts counting towards our total.
there are much more prolific eggers out there, post-wise, it's just that we were being counted maybe a bit earlier than they were, here in the new forum.
weird. up until 1000 posts, there are lots of cute steps to reach: newbie, beginner, gold egger.
after 1000, we all get lumped together.
call me when you have another 6000 posts, and we'll do lunch!ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
Thanks for the invitation and the congrats! I have a vintage bottle of Ripple that we can celebrate with.
You are correct; I did quit posting for a couple of years; and became more of a lurker; posting only
occassionaly.
Personally, I think that there should be several other levels of eggdome. How about a "Master of the BGE degree" or MBGE. It could be easily set up and monitored; incorporate certain requirements etc;. We do this in the wine industry.
The # of post's and what has been credited to an egger; I understand. It'll all work out!
