Is a Filet Mignon a Beef Tenderloin? I Not sure but it sure is expensive!

Thanks Forum!

  • It is beef tenderloin. What makes in mignon is the bacon wrap around it. BEWARE when eaten the tooth picks stuck into the tenderloin to hold the bacon on should be removed by you or the consumers. It's the rolls royce of the bovine.

Bacon makes it good, but does not change the name of the cut. From Wikipedia:

The tenderloin runs along either side of the spine, and is usually harvested as two long snake-shaped cuts of beef. The tenderloin (not to be confused with the Short Loin) is sometimes sold whole. If the short end of the tenderloin is cut into portions before cooking, that portion is known as filet mignon, or the fillet, from the French boneless meat (mignon meaning "small" as true mignons are cut from the smaller tail end of the tenderloin).

    Thanks BobS!

Sounds like good eats to me!

  • Don't buy them bacon wrapped. You will be paying the same price for the bacon you will be payiny for the fillet.

You can buy whole beef tenderloins (not prime, but prime tenderloin is kind of a waste IMO) for $9.99/lb if you look around.

That will give you 3-4 nice steaks and a great roast to make, and the smaller tail end can be used for great kabobs.
