I have a ham hock, lots of left over ham, split peas and a 5 qt. Lodge dutch oven looking to cook up some ham & split pea soup.[p]Would someone please forward a recipe? I plan on starting the cook early tomorrow morning. Any suggestions would be appreciated.[p]Thanks,[p]Gary

Treehouse,
Here is the one I have used for years :[p] Split Pea Soup [p]2 1/2 cups dry Split Peas
8 cups cold Water
3-4 Ham Hocks or 1 meaty Ham Bone
2-3 sprigs fresh Parsley
1 cup Celery (diced)
1 cup Carrot (diced)
1 1/2 cups Onion (diced)
1 T. freeze-dried Chives
2-3 cloves Garlic (crushed)
1/4 tsp. Marjoram
1/4 tsp. Thyme
1/2 tsp. fresh ground Pepper
1 Bay Leaf
Dash Cayenne Pepper[p]Wash peas and place in a dutch oven with the water.
Place on high heat and bring to a boil.
Remove from heat, cover and let sit for 1 hour.
Add remaining ingredients, bring to a boil, cover, and let simmer for 2-3 hours or until peas are tender.
Remove ham hocks or ham bone, shred with two forks and return to dutch oven.[p][p]

egret,
That's close to the way my wife makes her pea soup except she uses 2 smoked hamhocks and a leftover meaty picnic ham bone.
-
egret,[p]Looks like a good recipe...[p]I have found that having the hocks knocked adds a lot of flavor to the cook.

Treehouse,
Egret's recipe and my hand-me down from my mom are almost identicle, the hocks I use are smoked. Sometimes hard to find. One tasty twist is to dice some red potatoes to 1/4" cubes and add to soup for the last hour. Makes the soup
"stick to your ribs" as mom would say.

egret,[p]Thanks[p]I will get this started in the morning. I might even post pictures if I can get some film for my Kodak
