Will a thermo-electric cooler (warmer) keep my butts
hot for several hours? I am planning to pull my butts off the BGE at about 7 am Saturday morning and heading up to Athens for the UGA game. I was thinking of investing in one of the electric coolers that can double as a warmer to prolong keeping the butts in the safe zone until I pull the meat around noon. Never used one of the electric ones before and didn't know if it would help or would be a waste of money.[p]Any input would be welcome -- thanks![p]

Bulldog Bob, How about some heat packs like the ones Pyrex offers with their casseroles for travel?? Kind of the reverse of a cold pack (frozen) and you heat these in the microwave (carefully). You might find them to be much more reasonable from a cost standpoint.[p]Rascal

Bulldog Bob,[p]I don't know what the amperage is of a crock pot, but how about a DC->AC transformer with a crock pot?[p]Also, I've had one bad experience in pulling meat right after resting. It seems that the the cooler it became, the tougher it was to pull. My recommendation is to pull first and let it sit in some juice on your way there, hopefully in the crock pot.[p]I made a mix last night that tasted pretty good this morning (the pot is on low right now), consisting of:
(light) molassas
woo-sauce
bbq/ketchup
cayenne (if you want to kick it up)
apple-cider vinegar
brown sugar
dry mustard
red pepper flakes
optional, but a must for football: Budweiser

Bulldog Bob,
The thermo electic coolers/heaters work great at keeping temps.[p]Make sure you plug in the heater and get temp up before you plan to leave.[p]

Bulldog Bob,[p]I have one but haven't used it in heat mode. I started to once, but as it was heating up it started giving off a strong plastic odor which I didn't want in my food. I think it only heats/cools +/- 30 degrees outside temp anyway.[p]If you wrap them in a couple layers of beach towels, they stay hot for several hours. I'd try the heat packs too.

Bulldog Bob,[p]Warm your car up, use an IR thermo to find an area close to the engine that matches the temp you are looking for...[p]Double wrap your meat in heavy duty aluminum foi (don't they make FOIL bags now?)l, then find some air-tight vessel (cans with screw jars, or maybe paint buckets?) and store them in the engine compartment...[p]-Jeeves

Bulldog Bob,
I've gone 5 hours with butts staying above 140 with a double wrap of HD foil on each butt. Then pack towels around them in a cheap styrofoam cooler. You can duct tape around the lid to make sure you don't get any air loss. -RP

Bulldog Bob,[p]I looked at these last week when we were discussing keeping them in coolers with towels or newspaper. I think the idea is sound but for $100+, how much longer do they extend. You also need someway to convert from AC-DC or vice versa or buy the other power supply version. [p]I thought about drilling a small hole in the bottom of a cooler and putting an electric blanket inside, then running the cord in to the blanket and seal the hole. This would provide both heat, more insulation from the blanket, and shock protection. [p]I pulled a butt off at 9:30 one morning and drove from Savannah to north of Atlanta wrapped in foil, several towels, in a preheated cooler(boiled some water and dumped in), and the temp was still over 150 when we got there and put it in the oven and pulled it for dinner that night. About a 4 hr drive.
