BGE Repair

GrouperNinja,
I've used JBWeld to successfully repair a platsetter. Don't know about a dome though. How bad is it? One big crack or a bunch of small pieces?

GrouperNinja,
how bad is the damage? is it broken into multiple pieces? just cracked? do you have any pics? i have managed to successfully repair one of my eggs. if you can, email or post a pic or two of the damage. [p]would be happy to email you some directions of my fix, which incidentally has worked well for the last 3 or 4 years.

GrouperNinja,[p]JB Weld is most peoples favorite. However, JB Weld tech specs say to losten the glue take the item to above 600° and it will release.[p]My plate setter broke the other day in several pieces. I have been testing JB Weld as well as Gorilla Glue. On the small pieces both seem to be holding well.[p]Weather permitting I am going to put it all together with Gorilla Glue, figured I would give it a try. (I can't find any tech specs on the GG).[p]Gooed luck.

Grandpas Grub,
keep in mind that even at T-REX searing temps, the dome won't get very hot. you can have a fire going at 600/700/800 and still touch the dome with a bare hand (briefly!). most hot cooks are short, too, and that's another layer of insurance.[p]just as the closed dome insulates the gasket, i'd feel pretty reasonable saying that JB Weld won't spontaneously let loose when the dome temp hits 600+. some here have repaired the firebox itself with JB Weld. i gotta think that would give out eventually, but the dome should be ok. [p]one of the few ways to loosen gorilla glue is to heat it. expose it to a short period of high heat, and it will soften. when it sets, it is actually a plastic.[p]since i haven't had to repair the egg with either, i'm not talking from experience. hopefully a JB-Weld user will chime in

stike,
I've measured dome ceramic temps with devices a little more accurate than my hand and I don't think I've ever seen the ceramic get above 300. So, I think JB Weld would be a good option. If it isn't, well, he can buy a new lid and take comfort in having given it a good try. FWIW....[p]TNW

The Naked Whiz,
interesting.
i knew it didn't get "too" hot, but never measured it.[p]i think the best way to explain it is to think of a gasser or charcoal weber grill. try touching THOSE lids sometime. yeeeow. [p]one of the things i like about the egg is that i don't get (too) nervous when my two boys are nearby and i'm cooking. it just doesn't get very hot.
