I am alone tonight, so thought I would fire up the small! No problem! Problem, wouldn't get past 350!!
Cleaned right out. New lump. Large, medium, small.
Lit with electric starter! Was going! Waited about 15 minutes. Closed dome. Temp dropped! I mean dropped! was at 300... went to 200. Waited for an hour, finally hit 350, then stayed there! Every thing was open! As soon as I put the daisy wheel on ... dropped!back to 300 for 20 minutes. finally got fed up and did my steak on the stove![p]What is happening here?[p]btw every thing is lined up! and the small is weird!!!

smokn gramma g, are you using the same brand of lump as when you get it over 350°, and the lump wasn't damp or wet? Maybe this is for the experts.

Bob In Texas,
not wet coal, sun was, is still shining! In My Large, I can gen it well over 700![p]Gayle

smokn gramma g, I've heard of that happening from time to time. I cook on my small egg most often and it gets 600-650 with a good load of lump-(firebox full). It usually takes about 45 minutes to really crank up. You definitely waited long enough??
-
smokn gramma g,[p]TO get Miss Penny over 500 I have to keep the Daisy wheel off.
-
Scotty's Inferno,
them coals were glowing! I waited long enough!

Celtic Wolf,
So you control with the bottom vent??
-
smokn gramma g,[p] yep!!
-
smokn gramma g, Bad typing on my part. I was agreeing that waiting an hour was certainly long enough. The only other factor I can think of is quantity/quality of lump.
-
Yep same here.
With everything wide open she'll hold 500 just fine. You can just barely make out the temp in this pic.
-
Celtic Wolf,
thanks ... again!
-
smokn gramma g,
I can get 650 in about 20 minutes with no problem. Leave top up for about 10 minutes and use that junky Cowboy charcoal. I have found that it will get to higher temps faster than any other coal I have used.

Donald E Soppeland,
I use maple leaf lump charcoal, with good results in my large.[p]Using the same lump in my small...goes from bad to worse![p]Gayle

smokn gramma g,
are you sure the temp dropped and it just wasn't that your thermometer bit the dust?
Re-gasketing America one yard at a time. -
RRP,
Nope, my temp dropped like a lead balloon!
It dropped!

smokn gramma g,[p]The only thing I can think of, is your grate is clogged.[p]Fire is only charcoal. air, and ignition.[p]If it's lined up....and it's going out after you close it up... then it's starved for air or it's not getting a good draft...plain and simple.[p]....maybe give it a look.[p]Evans
I spent most of my money on good bourbon, and bad women...the rest, I just wasted!! -
smokn gramma g,
Sorry to hear about the troubles. It seems that as soon as you closed the lid that your temp dropped..either lump was gone (no) or no air(yes). When you put in your lump, did you stack it so that nothing was clogging the holes in the bottom grate? Also, check how much opening your vents, top and bottom vents are open. Once you get to the temp you desire, you can start to close them little by little and let the egg stablize at the temp you want. If this doesn't work, then you must have gotten hold of some bad lump. And then you must invoke the chicken bone voodoo dance.LOL. HTH.
