Is the mini green egg also a smoker? would wood chunks fit it or just wood chips? also, does anyone know where i can get a plate setter for one?

  • mark,
The mini is more of a grill than smoker. You can cook short cooks using small wood chunks with no problem and will smoke great. The fire bowl is small so you are only talking 3 to 5 hrs of cooking time...or refill bowl to continue cook. There is not a plate setter made for mini. Several people have shaped pizza stones for indirect cooks. I have a second grid and fire ring to raise the grid and use a clay saucer on lower grid for a indirect cook works good.

    mark,
If it wouldn't raise it too high, you could use a 12x12 stepping paver like at HD or Lowe's.

mark,[p]It's not much of a smoker if you ask me. I have smoked a small butt on mine and have seen a rack of ribs rolled up and smoked (several year ago at Eggtoberfest), but it's a lot of work.[p]As far as a platesetter, I have a 8 or 9 inch pizza stone that worked, but someone on the forum made on that looked cool![p]Smokey

    <p />mark,
It can be a good little smoker if you make an indirect set up. I made a plate setter and a raised grid. Two grids and a drip pan will make a quick indirect set up if you want to keep it simple. This mini pork butt took 10 hours and two loads of lump to cook. Small smokin wood chunks (1/2" x 1/2" x 2") or chips work just fine.

    chefarnoldi,
Thanks. Hope it lasts forever cause I'm not makin another. Nasty, dusty work. I use to work in industrial design- concept and prototype. Makin stuff for the egg to help it cook better is fun. I guess I'm a self proclamed "Eggventor", he heeeee. It's in my green blood.[p]Working on an egg table prototype, in the testing stage right now.
