I haven't been able to work much today because of you guys and gals. Been reading past posts with pics and recepies and OMG, I had no idea that an egg could cook all those things so good and so easily. Can't wait til tomorrow night to get mine and so some egging!!!! What'd be a good thing to start with? Only want to cook for a couple hours at most though. Not getting it til around 5 and want to eat before 8.

DonDon,
Pork Tenderloin is a great "first cook"... there's lots of recipes and you get to use smoking chips (apple is great!) and it's not too hot!

A nice steak would be perfect for your first egg dinner since there is not a lot of time. Season it with your favorites and throw it on, one way we do it T-REX style I think you can find that on the Naked Whiz website, you sear it for ~3minutes on 500+ degree fire, take it off and let rest ~20minutes then throw on just to finish up to med rare @ about 350 degree fire. Steak with some potatoes and nice salad, sounds good its making me hungry.[p]Good Luck with your egg, we absoutely love ours, been egging for about year and half, never going back to gas...[p]bw

DonDon,
My first cook was chicken. I still remember how good it was.
100_0321.jpg Look around, you'll find lots of recipes. should take about 45 min to get to temp at about 400º, and about an hour to cook.Good luck, and welcome to the cult.

DonDon,[p]Good 'ol baby backs cooked indirectly was a great first cook for me. Showed me how easily it maintained a dome temp of 250 with no effort for 5 hours. Then I did a Boston Butt for 14 hours, again...no effort. :)[p]ENJOY![p]STL Scott

DonDon,[p]Gotta vote for spatchcock chicken. Easy to do and cooks at about 350 for an hour or so. Easy to maintain for a first temp control attempt. You can find the recipe on the Whiz's site.

DonDon,
I'd sure give yourself a good bit of time to assemble that Puppy....assuming it's unassembled. If it's unassembled, you sure won't have 3 hours of cook time. sometimes it even takes some assistance. I believe that Chubby has a nice shot of Egg assembly by committee.[p]Mike

DonDon,
Welcome to the club! Chicken is always good, easy enough for the first time. 350 dome will work on some chicken parts. Rack over drip pan on grid, no plate setter needed and away you go. Done in about an hour/hour and a half.
Good luck and have fun with your new egg.

• DonDon,
Just rememberr to keep the temp down around 350 for the first few cooks so the gasket adhesive as a chancee to setup otherwise the gasket might come loose and you will end up with a burned gasket.[p]My vote is for splachcocked chicken for a first cook. 65 min at 350 and you will be done.

• Morro Bay Rich,
The rest of the directions:
1. raised grid
2. direct heat.

ClayQ,[p]I'm planning on using the same chicken parts you have there for doing pulled chicken. Do you think that the chicken would be pullable using your cooking method? Or do I need to go indirect?[p]STL Scott

• Morro Bay Rich,

• DonDon,
I speak from experience. I seared tri-tip at 700 deg at the Eggs by the Bay Eggfest in June and the gasket let loose on one of the new Eggs that was to be sold as a demo. Later in the day, Bobby-Q from BGE in Atlanta gave a talk and his suggestion was to limit the first 8 to 10 cooks to 350 deg or less to make sure the gasket adhesive had a chance to setup before going to higher temps.

spbull472,
Let's see, I guess you can shred the meat from well done chicken using legs and thighs. Bigger chicken should work better than small ones.
The chicken in the pic was cooked indirect and was very juicy but not what I would think of as pullable.

DonDon,[p]Pork steaks are also a really easy cook. You can do them direct, from 350 to 450, just keep turning them every 15 min., and keep some teriyaki sauce, or other marinade, on hand for a few splashes for the last 2 turns. Depending on their thickness and the temp and distance from coals, expect as little as 45 minutes to about 1:15.[p]gdenby

My 2 teen sons had it out of the car and assembled in no time at all. Maybe half hour.[p]Gwen
