that issue is often brought up and the naysayers will be here shortly. OTOH there are a lot of Rutland gaskets in use on both BGE and Primos today. Pick your poison - don't forget the Cotronics product is ceramic spun so thin as to make it a thread - same way as glass. Both could be friable under certain conditions.

everything is bad for you, i just pick and choose my risks. is the fumes from the glue your curing good for you with the felt gasket. i bet its not, i just read the other day about the hazards of new car smell. after a few low and slows the rutland starts to get matted down with grease, im betting its not that bad, but for legal reasons no one is going to tell you its safe. with the rutland you only put the gasket on the lower lip and not on the dome so your not lifting the gasket up over your food.

I've never cured a gasket on any Egg, large, medium or small, and I've never noticed a problem. FWIW...[p]TNW

The Naked Whiz, I think you can just cut the chase and rub lard on the gasket to maker stick! I have had a large and a medium for years and and have never heard of curing the gasket until recently. They both still have the original gasket. I have bought two Rutland kits from RRP but still have not needed to use them. I'm sure the cement is out of date by now though.

yes I sold those to you 3 years ago so that adhesive is extremely dead now! That's another advantage of this peel and stick Rutland gasket.

I just experienced a melt down of the gasket on my relatively new XL BGE. Cooking steaks by the recommended method and when burbing before taking the steaks out, I noticed the two gaskets had melted together and were pulling off of the rim. Got the steaks out and shut it down. Next day, found the charred remains of the gasket pieces that had pulled away.[p]I need suggestions as to how to properly clean the rims and what product to reapply. [p]Please take pity on this BGE noob.

The big difference would be that I had finally (2 days ago) finished replacing the original gasket. (Toasted after a previous gasket disaster when a friend cooked a duck at high temp.) I struggled getting the adhesive removed. I scraped with a putty knive and used acetone to remove all I could. I thought I did it right. New gasket went on easy. Waited 2 days with the lid closed. Cooked the steaks as described in the book, taking care to open the lid as described. Steaks were wonderful - but my gasket is a disaster - again. I just got the egg about a month ago - and need to know how to do this right so I can spend more time using it than I spend working on the gasket. Help me too please!
