Just built my table-question about gas line?
It took all day, but it is done except for the varnish. I have a nook on my concrete patio that is beside the back of my indoor gas fireplace chimney. I have never used the gas for it and have never turned on the gas line outside that is exposed coming from the back of the fireplace protruding onto my patio. I would like my table to butt up in that nook, but worry if the heat from the egg would be dangerous being so close to that exposed gas line. Any ideas?

Bryaninatlanta, there may be a shut off where the line originates, you can shut it off there if your not going to use it. I don't see a problem either way as long as there are not any leaks
-
Bryaninatlanta,
Gas piping is not good in a confined area, especially a confined area with heat- spark and flame near. Trace the piping back to where it comes out of the house and look for a valve. If found, shut it off, cut the downstream piping off and plug the valve on the patio side, if no valve, go back to the source and plug it or cap it downstream of the connection.
If in doubt about anything, photo and e-mail me, be glad to help.
That piping was installed as a future connection for a gasser, one more down, many to go!!
Keep it safe.

Carbonizer,
Tha gas pipe is coming out of the house and into the back off the fireplace. The is another valve pointing towards the deck which is capped. There was a valve right there. I turned it to the left towards "SHUT". Now am I safe as long as no leaks or should I just shut the valve off anyway since I don't use my fireplace and just move the table away from that area to be safe?

tach18k,
See response to Carbonizer. This is what you meant for me to do right?

Bryaninatlanta,
If the gas line is still working or energized, I would branch off the line and make a torch for firing the Egg. [p]Chef Jerry
-
Jwirlwind,
That is a great idea. It is in the right location. I just worry about heat the Egg regulates. You know-fear of blowing my house up. It's only 3 years old! I might ask my father in law to investigate your idea. Thanks!
-
Bryaninatlanta,
There is no danger of blowing the house. The Egg doesn't get near hot enough to cause an explosion. Being in the open, the gas is not subject to explosion unless you have one real bad leak in which you would smell it before you lit a fire. It takes a flame to ignite gas, not heat. Bryaninatlanta,[p]Varnish and flame warrent a word of caution: I hope you are using fireproof varnish or you could be in for a flare-up![p]Bayaba
-
Jwirlwind,
That's the answer I needed to end my worries. I will explore the torch idea though. Thank you truly.
-
Bayaba,
Plan on using a new can of MINWAX indoor/outdoor HELMSMAN SPAR URETHANE CLEAR GLOSS. It says-Exceptional Protection from:
Sunlight
Rain and Moisture
Temperature Changes[p]Sound alright?
-
Bryaninatlanta,[p]I am building a table tomorrow for my large and medium.[p]Are you planning to stain yours or just use the urethane?
-
Fidel,
Urethane. See my response to Bayaba. I found it to be the best fit. Will apply tomorrow. I hope you hsve good plans as I used the BGE site plans and had to make modifications to make it work.
-
Bryaninatlanta,[p]I have my own plans drawn out based loosely on the BGE large table plans. BGE doesn't have any published for 2 eggs.[p]I can't decide if I will stain and seal, or just seal it.
-
Fidel,
Well, I think sealing is the easier way to go depending on the wood you use. I made a fatal mistake years ago when I built a cedar bench and sealed it with Thompsons water seal. That stuff is no better than windex. It eventually turned gray and I murdered it with my sledge hammer. Did some research this time. Stain looks way better, but is messy and shows drip mistakes unless you use a foam brush. (Only in my opinion as I am a weekend warrior only)

Bryaninatlanta,
I just looked up the auto ignition temp of Natural gas (Methane). It happens to be 1076 deg F. I hope the outside of your egg won't get that hot.
I would be concerned about having a flame so close to a capped gas line. Just like the others suggested, I would close the valve at the house and disconnect the line.[p]Just My $0.02[p]Mike in Abita
-
Mike in Abita,
Thanks for the response. I did turn the valve to SHUT and will have the table and Egg moved away from the capped valve. I may use the gas line as a torch like Chef Jerry brought up AFTER I speak to a gas guy. Not interested in messing with that myself!!!
-
Bryaninatlanta,
Maybe you can trade the gas guy some egg food for his services??? [p]I do like Jerry's idea.[p]Mike in Abita
-
Mike in Abita,
Maybe some large sea scallops wrapped in procuitto and asaparagus drenged in bernaise sauce might sway his or her rate!!!! Thanks for all Mike!
-
Bryaninatlanta,
I notice you got many expert responses, but, in my opinion based on being a 30 yr union journeymen plumber I would not leave a gas line installed in a conceiled space weather it is capped, plugged, out of the sunlight, not exposed to normal view, above flood level, not subject to temps above the flash point of natural gas of 1025 deg or for any other friggin reason.
SHUT IT OFF AT THE SOURCE, REMOVE THE PIPING IN THE CONCEILED SPACE BACK TO THE CONNECTION OR VALVE AND PLUG IT.
Your insurance company just might aggree with me.
Don't need to see any more pic's of scorched houses here.
-
Bryaninatlanta,
For that I'd drive to Atlanta.
-
Carbonizer,
Very well put.
