XL Plate Setter Dimensions
G'Day all,[p]I bought an XL BGE a while back from the only company that imports them into Australia, but they don't import any of the accessories, and have no intention of doing so. [p]My problem is - I want to get a Plate Setter to do more/better/different indirect cooking. I've tried using pizza stones to deflect the heat up until now, but this doesn't give the functional flexibility I'm looking for.[p]Therefore, my choices are (1) import a Plate Setter from the US or (2) make my own. I've decided to go with (2) due to the logistical nightmare of ordering and transporting a piece of heavy ($$$) ceramic across the Pacific.[p]Now to my actual request - if someone has an XL Plate Setter, I was hoping you could give me a set of measurements (and drawings/sketches if your aptitude and inclination permits). I then plan on making my own in our pottery kiln.[p]I was going to just do a measurement inside the BGE and take it from there, but wasn't sure how much airspace should be left between the legs, so figured I should try and get some proper measurements.[p]Any other info would be much appreciated.[p]TIA.[p]Pete R.

AussieSloth,
I have a xl platesetter and will take measurments and send them as soon as it stops raining, later today I hope. I imagine it would cost a lot to send that to the land of Oz. I was there in 2000 would love to come back someday. Will try to get those measures to you later.

AussieSloth,
Ok, the rain let up enough to get the platesetter out of the egg and try and measure. If I knew how to put a copy of a sketch into this site it would be easier, but I will try and explain this. If the dealer had a platesetter for any of the eggs that you could look at it might my explanation easier to comprehend. It has 3 legs on it equally spaced around the outside edge. I measured directly across the middle of the outside edge of 1 leg directly across to the outside edge of the body of the platesetter and it is 21" so I guess you could say it is 21" diameter, but the whole body of the platesetter isn't that big as the legs are 5" wide on the outside edge of them and they come out from the main body about 2.75"- to 3", it is hard to tell exactly. I measured across the outside point of one leg to the outside point of another leg and it is 21.5". From the inside point of one leg to the inside point of the next leg in the circle it is 16.5". The platesetter body is 3/4" thick and the legs themselves are only 3/4" from the bottom of the leg to the bottom of the platesetter so you have a total distance from bottom of leg to top of platesetter of 1.5". As the outside edge of the platesetter gets to each leg it curves out a bit and makes the leg wider at its base than its outside dimension of 5" wide. This is just a gradual curve that I would think makes the legs a bit stronger than just having them meet the main body of the setter at right angles. Not being good at geometry, or diagrams, or as I read this, even trying to explain all of the above, I am not sure this is going to help you. Maybe someone else will be able to do a better job. Oh yes, you probably wanted this in metric and although we are metric here in Canada, I am old school and still have to think in imperial measures. If you do want metric I could get it for you as my tape measure does do both I just hate counting all the little lines. I hope this helps a little, as I read it I am not sure you will understand what I am trying to say, a drawing would be better, if I was a computer guy I would try and do that for you. I could take a picture and email it to you if you want but I guess with the pictures of platesetters on the web site you understand what it looks like.

eat-bbq,[p]Many thanks for your reply. Between the photos on the BGE website and your explanation, I think I'll give it a try in the very near future.[p]I just need to get the gas-fitter out to hook up the kiln so I can fire it up.[p]Thanks again.

AussieSloth,[p]Congratulations, you must have the only XL in Australia! Who did you buy it from?[p]Most BGE owners in Australia can't buy gaskets let alone a new XL.[p]Please shed some light on this.[p]

An Egg Downunder,[p]'BBQ's Galore' sell XL BGE's, and only the XL size - no smaller ones. I bought mine a few years ago in Brisbane, but they still sell them. I see the demo in the store every time I go in (I look to see if they have finally changed their minds and have begun to import accessories - no luck so far).[p]Hope this helps.[p]Cheers,[p]Pete.
