Calibrating Thermometer
Comments
-
Pat P,[p]Put it in boiling water. 212º is what you're looking for. Don't worry about it not being zeroed out.

thermometer should never be at 0*...unless the surrounding temp is 0*. For example, it is about 90'ish where I live today...guess what, the thermometer, without a fire, reads about 90*. so, whatever it is in your neck of the woods is about what it should be before starting a fire. but you know the trick to calibrate it...hold it with tongs and stick the probe in boiling water and it should read 212*.

Pat P,
but nobody has told you what to do if it doesn't read 212 in boiling water did they? Take a small adjustable wrench and turn the small nut on the backside until it reads 212 while the tip is submersed in boiling water. Then take that clip that was on the inside of your dome, walk to the trash can and dump it! More often than not when that clip is in place and you bump or twist the thermometer it will go out of whack.

Sundown,[p]If you don't like the idea of boiling water and a boiling hot thermometer to adjust, then try putting it in water packed with ice and stir. It is the same idea as the boiling water but this time adjust for a temp around 32 degress F.[p]Ciao
