BGE - Environmentally Friendly?

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
Here's a link to a recent AP article about the possible environmental impacts of propane grills, charcoal briquettes and hardwood lump. It seems that hardwood lump may not be as bad for the environment as some alternatives.[p]The article also says that hardwood lump sales went from about 17,000 tons in 1993 to 100,000 tons in 2006, while briquette sales remained essentially flat. That's quite a jump (of lump). I suppose that the increase in hardwood lump sales, in spite of an apparent decrease in charcoal grill sales, may be attributable to the rise in popularity of the BGE and other ceramic cookers.[p]I guess the BGE is "green" in more ways than one.[p]RenoDon

RenoDon,[p]Not only does the Egg use lump, but it uses so little. I don't think I've ever used more than 4 lbs of lump at one time, which was for a 15 hr. cook, and I still had re-usable charcoal.[p]gdenby

    gdenby,
Have you ever tried making your own lump?
If not, be sure to notify your local fire department first; you'll make a LOT of smoke.

  • RenoDon,some thoughts: propane is not being produced by mother nature, or at least in any amount that can come close to replacing what is being used. At some unknown time in the future, I'll have to heat my house with another fuel. Wood heat, including lump charcoal, comes from a renewable energy source, trees. Despite what the article implies, there are enough trees in the USA to heat every residence with wood heat, and for every residence to have a BGE as its cooking source. That reality is not in keeping with the environmental nazis political agenda, but is the situation. So, don't ever feel "green guilt" by using your egg. More trees die and rot than man uses for lumber and cooking and heating. Climbing off my soapbox now. :)
