Fire Starting

Hello, Is there anyone out there that can give a tip on how to start the fire with the starter sticks? It has taken me numerous times to keep the fire lit. I used a whole starter stick and placed it in the center of the lump coal then place some coal on top of it. I then shut the lid and hope for the best. Is there a trick to it? [p][p]

    Coach Foerster,
I use the Big Green Egg starters I take one and break into several pieces. I light the fire in a small triangle. I very loosely stack lump around the fire starter. I leave the bottom vent wide open and the top of the dome wide open for about ten minutes and it works great. I am sure there is more than one method that works.... HOPE THIS HELPS!

  • Pharmeggist, thanks for the help. We just finished our second meal on the egg and will try smoking the next time. Any hints on starting a fire but keeping the temp around 50 degress?

  • Pharmeggist, my bad 250 degrees.

  • Coach Foerster,
A few paper towels. Pour some vegetable oil on them and roll them up. Put paper towels in between a few pieces of lump and light. Close the lid for 20 minutes.

  • Coach Foerster,[p]I got my egg this past weekend (and love it so far). I easily started it by putting some wood shavings from my woodshop (these were pine and oak from a jointer) in the middle of the lump, dropping in a match, and putting some more lump on top, once it got going. Closed the lid, and opened the dampers. Came up to temp (375) really fast, and stayed there. [p]-John
