Sunday Russia-Ukraine update:
"Zelenskyy said the United States has given Moscow and Kyiv a deadline of June to reach an agreement on ending the war, after the two countries held two days of talks in Abu Dhabi this week.
Zelenskyy said Washington has proposed talks in Miami in a week, and that Kyiv has agreed.
The US also asked Russia and Ukraine to agree to a new ceasefire covering strikes on energy infrastructure as a de-escalation step during the talks, Zelenskyy said. He added that Kyiv was ready to stop attacks on Russian oil facilities and other energy infrastructure, but Moscow has yet to agree.
Zelenskyy added that Ukraine and Russia remain far apart in the discussions about territory. He said the US was proposing a free economic zone in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, which Russia mostly occupies, but that neither Ukraine nor Russia was thrilled by this idea.
Earlier, the Ukrainian leader met his negotiating team in Kyiv and said Ukraine “needs results” that ensure “effective security guarantees” for the country.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow that a third round of talks aimed at ending Russia’s war on Ukraine should take place “soon”. But he said there is no fixed date yet."Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. Monday Russia-Ukraine update:
"Russia launched more than 400 drones and about 40 missiles on Saturday in a further attack on Ukraine’s energy sector, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. Olena Harmash reports for Reuters.Zelenskyy told reporters on Saturday that the United States wants Russia and Ukraine to sign a peace deal that ends the war by June, before Trump pivots to focusing on the U.S. midterm elections. Barak Ravid reports for Axios.
Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha said Ukrainian and Russian leaders need to meet in person to hash out the hardest remaining issues in peace talks, and that only US President Donald Trump has the power to bring about an agreement to end the four-year-old war.
Sybiha said that from the 20-point peace plan, which formed the basis of recent trilateral negotiations, only “a few” items remain outstanding, but the “most sensitive and most difficult” have to be dealt with at the leaders’ level.
Sybiha added that in the event of a ceasefire deal, the US has told Ukraine that it was prepared to ratify security guarantees in Congress, and that it would then provide a security “backstop” to support the peace deal, though no US troops would be deployed on the ground in Ukraine.
Sybiha also said that other countries beyond France and the United Kingdom had confirmed their readiness to send troops to Ukraine as a deterrence force if an agreement is reached."

Emma Burrows reports for AP News.
An agreement on ending Russia’s war on Ukraine must also take into consideration security guarantees for Russia, Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Grushko told the Izvestia media outlet. These guarantees include the rejection of any deployment in Ukraine of troops from NATO states, he said.
Russia remains open to cooperation with the United States, but is not hopeful about economic ties despite Washington’s ongoing efforts to end the war in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the Russia-based media outlet TV BRICS."Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Saturday Russia-Ukraine update:
"Russian and Ukrainian envoys are set to engage in a new round of United States-brokered talks next week in Geneva as the war approaches the four-year mark with no apparent compromises on territory in sight.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that the trilateral talks, which follow two earlier rounds in Abu Dhabi, would be held on February 17-18, according to the RIA Novosti news agency.
The new round of negotiations was confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s communications adviser, Dmytro Lytvyn.
As fighting continues along the roughly 1,250-kilometre (750-mile) front line, with Moscow keeping up its assault on Ukraine’s power grid and Kyiv launching long-range attacks on war-related targets like oil refineries, the future of Ukraine’s Donbas industrial heartland remains a major bone of contention.
Russia is pushing for Ukraine to pull out of the fifth of the eastern Donetsk region in the Donbas that it still controls. Ukraine, for its part, has rejected a unilateral pull-back and wants Western security guarantees to deter Russia from re-launching its offensive if a ceasefire is reached.
Zelenskyy said last week that the US had given the warring parties a June deadline to reach a deal, though US President Donald Trump’s previous ultimatums have not resulted in a breakthrough."

Sunday Russia-Ukraine update:
"Zelenskyy wrote on X that he had spoken by phone to US envoy Steve Witkoff and US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, ahead of the next round of ceasefire talks in Geneva.
Earlier in Munich, Zelenskyy voiced hope that the Geneva talks would be substantive, but added that Ukraine was being asked “too often” by the US to make concessions. He said he also wanted to hear what compromises Moscow would be ready to accept.
Zelenskyy said he was feeling “a little bit” of pressure from Trump, who recently said the Ukrainian should not miss the “opportunity” to make peace with Russia soon, and urged him “to get moving”.
He also accused Moscow of seeking to delay decisions by changing its lead negotiator – from the military intelligence chief Igor Kostyukov during Abu Dhabi talks to President Vladimir Putin’s adviser, Vladimir Medinsky, in the Geneva round.
Zelenskyy said that US negotiators had told Ukraine the Russians had promised a swift end to the war if Ukrainian forces immediately withdrew from the part of the eastern Donetsk region that it still controls. Ukraine had rejected that idea and instead expressed a readiness to discuss a US plan for a free trade zone in the region, while freezing the rest of the 1,200km (745-mile) front line.
Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, said the only two options Kyiv is willing to accept are sticking to the current lines of control or the establishment of a free trade zone.
Zelenskyy said he hoped the US would stay involved in the negotiations and that there would be an opportunity for Europe to play a bigger role. “Europe is practically not present at the table,” he said.
Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi told his audience in Munich that he agrees with Zelenskyy’s assessment that Europe should be more involved in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy added that Russia had to accept a ceasefire monitoring mission and an exchange of prisoners of war. He estimated that Russia currently had about 7,000 Ukrainian troops, while Kyiv had more than 4,000 Russians.
He also suggested that Moscow was opposed to the deployment of French and UK troops in Ukraine after the war, which Paris and London have said they are willing to do, because Russia’s Putin “wants to have the opportunity to come back”."Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Tuesday Middle East update:
"Trump has threatened to strike the Islamic Republic unless it agrees to a deal curbing its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. He’s mobilized warships and fighter jets near the country in response to a recent deadly crackdown following mass protests.
The first round of talks earlier this month marked a “good start,” Iran has said, adding that discussions were limited to nuclear issues—a condition it has insisted on. Still, the US and Israel say the talks should also cover Iran’s missile program and support for regional militias.
Meanwhile, Iran said it’ll will close parts of the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most important oil-shipping lanes—for previously announced military drills.
Trump said yesterday he’ll be indirectly involved in the talks and he thinks the Iranians “want to make a deal.” Here’s our explainer on Iran’s nuclear program.Another group of 18 F-35 fighter jets, together with several tankers, arrived in the Middle East yesterday, according to open-source flight radar data.
The U.S. military is preparing for the possibility of sustained, weeks-long operations against Iran, according to two U.S. officials, in what would become a far more serious conflict than previously seen between the two countries. Phil Stewart and Idrees Ali report for Reuters."

Peskov said Russian military intelligence chief Igor Kostyukov and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mikhail Galuzin would also take part in the Geneva talks, while Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, would engage in a separate working group on economic issues.

Wednesday Middle East update:
"Indirect talks between the United States and Iran held yesterday in Geneva ended with an agreement on a “set of guiding principles,” according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. He added that both sides had agreed to exchange drafts on a potential deal. Three Iranian officials said that Iran had indicated willingness to suspend nuclear enrichment for three to five years, and then to join a regional consortium for civilian grade enrichment. In exchange, Iran demanded that Washington lift financial and banking sanctions and the embargo on its oil sales. A U.S. official said that the Iranians would provide more detailed proposals in the next two weeks, but did not provide any specifics. Aaron Boxerman, Erika Solomon, and Nick Cumming-Bruce report for the New York Times.Vice President JD Vance said yesterday that Iran had failed to acknowledge core U.S. demands during yesterday’s talks. Vance told reporters that the talks had not yielded any breakthrough, adding that military action against Iran remained an option. “In some ways, it went well - they agreed to meet afterwards. But in other ways, it was very clear that the president has set some red lines that the Iranians are not yet willing to actually acknowledge,” Vance said. Wednesday Russia-Ukraine update:
"Following the first day of talks in Geneva, Ukrainian, Russian, and U.S. negotiators offered no public signs of progress. The negotiations were expected to focus on Ukrainian territory in eastern Ukraine that Moscow wants under its control as a price for ending the war. Kyiv has said this demand is a nonstarter. The talks are expected to continue today. Constant Meheut reports for the New York Times. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Axios yesterday that the Ukrainian people would reject a peace deal that involves Ukraine unilaterally withdrawing from the eastern Donbas region and turning it over to Russia. During an interview, Zelenskyy also said that it was “not fair” that President Trump kept calling on Ukraine, not Russia, to make concessions for peace. Barak Ravid and Dave Lawler report.

Thursday Middle East update:
"President Trump was briefed yesterday by his top advisers on the nuclear talks with Iran held earlier this week in Geneva. “The Iranian foreign minister told Kushner and Witkoff a lot of positive things but the devil is in the details. The ball is in Iran’s court, so let’s see,” a U.S. official said.“ A second U.S. official was more skeptical, calling the talks in Geneva “a nothing-burger.” Barak Ravid reports for Axios.Senior national security officials told Trump that the U.S. military is ready for potential strikes on Iran as soon as Saturday, sources told CBS News. Trump has not yet made a final decision about whether to strike Iran, officials said, describing the conversations around Iran as fluid and ongoing. One source said that Secretary of State Marco Rubio plans to visit Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel in about two weeks for further discussions. Jennifer Jacobs and James LaPorta report.
Trump’s “Board of Peace” will gather today in Washington for its inaugural meeting that will focus on reconstruction and building an international stabilization force in Gaza. More than 40 countries and the EU have confirmed they will send officials to the meeting, according to a U.S. official. Germany, Italy, Norway, and Switzerland are among dozens of countries that have not joined the board but are expected to attend as observers. Aamer Madhani and Matthew Lee report for AP News.
The U.N. Security Council held a meeting yesterday on the ceasefire deal and Israel’s efforts to expand control in the West Bank. The U.N. meeting was meant to go ahead today, but was moved after Trump announced the board’s meeting. “We are hearing the chattering class criticizing the structure of the board, that it’s unconventional, that it’s unprecedented,” U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Thursday Russia-Ukraine update:
"Officials from Moscow and Kyiv said the talks held in Geneva this week were difficult. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said yesterday that “as of today, we cannot say that the result is sufficient.” Washington, however, reported “meaningful progress,” suggesting there would be another set of talks soon. John Revill and Olivia Le Poidevin report for Reuters.
The heads of five European intelligence agencies told Reuters in recent days that they did not believe an agreement to end the war in Ukraine would be reached this year, adding that Russia does not want to end the war quickly. Four of them said Moscow was using the talks with the United States to push for sanctions relief and business deals. “Russia is not seeking a peace agreement. They are seeking their strategic goals, and those have not changed,” one intelligence chief said.
President Zelenskyy told the Piers Morgan Uncensored current affairs show that Russia and Ukraine were close to defining terms for how a potential ceasefire would be monitored, but progress on “political” issues had been slower, including on the most divisive issue of control of territory.
In Washington, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said there was “meaningful progress made” with pledges “to continue to work towards a peace deal together”, and more talks are expected in the near future.
Vladimir Medinsky, Russia’s top negotiator, said the two days of talks in Geneva were “difficult but businesslike,” telling reporters that further negotiations would be held soon, without specifying when.
Rustem Umerov, the head of Kyiv’s negotiating team, said that the second day had been “intensive and substantive” and that both sides were working towards decisions that can be sent to their presidents, he said."Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Friday Middle East update:
"President Trump said yesterday during the Board of Peace meeting in Washington that he would decide in the next 10 days whether to continue diplomacy with Iran or order a military strike. Several hours later, Trump told reporters on Air Force One that 10 days “would be enough time, ten, fifteen days, pretty much maximum.” U.S. officials said that the arrival of the USS Ford aircraft carrier and its strike group to the Eastern Mediterranean in the coming days will be a key factor in the timing of a possible military campaign against Iran. Barak Ravid reports for Axios.Trump yesterday announced that the United States would contribute $10 billion to the Board of Peace during the board’s first meeting in Washington. Trump did not say where the money would come from or whether Congress had been consulted. Trump also announced $7 billion in pledges from nine other member countries to rebuild Gaza. Indonesia, Morocco, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, and Albania said they would commit peacekeeping troops to Gaza, while Egypt and Jordan have committed troops to train police. Yesterday’s meeting provided few details about how Hamas can be disarmed or when Israel might fully withdraw from Gaza. Michael Crowley reports for the New York Times; Sophia Cai and Eli Stokols report for POLITICO.
Trump also said that in the future, “the Board of Peace is going to almost be looking over the United Nations and making sure it runs properly.”Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the board was formed because the “Gaza situation was impossible to solve under orthodoxy,” while adding, “We hope that this can serve as a model for other complex and difficult situations.” Michael Crowley reports for the New York Times."
Edit to add:
"Trump has told Congress that he is pursuing a civil nuclear pact with Saudi Arabia that does not include non-proliferation safeguards, according to a copy of the document sent to Congress in November. Arms control groups and congressmen have repeatedly insisted that any agreement come with guardrails, including a provision preventing Saudi Arabia from enriching uranium or reprocessing spent nuclear fuel - both potential pathways to weapons. However, the report seems to open the way to Saudi Arabia having an enrichment program as it refers to “additional safeguards and verification measures to the most sensitive areas of potential nuclear cooperation” between the United States and Saudi Arabia. Friday Russia-Ukraine update:
Not much from the war but a bit about The Board of Peace:
"France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Pascal Confavreux expressed surprise to see the European Commission had sent a commissioner to participate in Trump’s meeting, noting that it “does not have a mandate from the [European] Council to go and participate”.
Confavreux also said France would not take part in Trump’s initiative until the Board of Peace returned its focus to Gaza in line with a United Nations Security Council resolution.
Several European Union member states have said they will not participate in the peace board after Trump extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who launched the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and is subject to an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court.

Monday Middle East update:
"U.S. and Iranian negotiators are set to meet in Geneva on Thursday, and the United States is expecting to receive a draft proposal on Tuesday before the meeting, according to a senior U.S. official. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told CBS yesterday that he is still working on the proposal and political leadership in Tehran has yet to sign off. Araghchi said on Friday during an interview that the U.S. side had not asked for zero enrichment of uranium during negotiations so far. A White House official contested this, saying President Trump had been clear that Iran could not have the capacity to enrich uranium. Barak Ravid reports for Axios; Pranav Baskar reports for the New York Times.
A senior Iranian official told Reuters that both sides remain sharply divided following the first two rounds of talks. However, the official said that Iran has offered concessions since last week, including possibly sending half of its enriched uranium abroad, diluting the rest, and taking part in creating a regional enrichment consortium. Iran would do this in return for U.S. recognition of Iran’s right to “peaceful nuclear enrichment” under a deal that would also lift economic sanctions. Parisa Hafezi reports.
Trump is leaning towards conducting an initial strike in the coming days, intended to show Iran that they must agree to give up the ability to make nuclear weapons, U.S. officials said. Possible targets include Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps headquarters, the country’s nuclear sites, and the ballistic missile program. Trump told his advisers that if this failed to sway Tehran, he would leave open the possibility of a military assault later this year intended to topple Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Julian E. Barnes, David E. Sanger, Tyler Pager, and Eric Schmitt report for the New York Times.
Satellite imagery captured on Friday shows more than 60 attack aircraft parked at U.S. military base Muwaffaq Salti in Jordan, roughly tripling the number of jets that are normally there. Riley Mellen, Christoph Koettl, and Eric Schmitt report for the New York Times.
EU top diplomats, including EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, are set to meet with Nikolay Mladenov, the director of Trump’s “Board of Peace” in Brussels today. “We want to be part of the peace process in Gaza and also contribute with what we have,” Kallas said. Only Hungary and Bulgaria are full members of the board. 12 other EU nations sent observers to the inaugural meeting in Washington last week. Sam McNeil reports for AP News.
U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said on Friday in an interview with Tucker Carlson that Israel has a right to much of the Middle East according to Genesis Chapter 15 in the Bible. When asked if it would be ok for Israel to take this land, Huckabee said, “It would be fine if they took it all.” Following Huckabee’s interview, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain, UAE, Qatar, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, and the Palestinian Authority issued a joint statement calling Huckabee’s remarks “dangerous and inflammatory.” A U.S. embassy spokesperson said yesterday that Huckabee’s comments were taken out of context and that there is no change to U.S. policies on Israel. Melanie Lidman and Samy Magdy report for AP News. "

Tuesday Middle East update:
"President Trump said yesterday that Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Dan Caine believed that any military action ordered against Iran would be “something easily won.” However, sources said that Caine told Trump that carrying out a small or medium strike on Iran would carry a high risk of U.S. casualties and that such an operation would have a negative effect on U.S. weapon stockpiles. Caine has also said that the operations under consideration in Iran would be more difficult than the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro last month. Two sources told Axiosthat Caine was particularly concerned about becoming entangled in a prolonged conflict. Eric Schmitt reports for the New York Times; Barak Ravid and Marc Caputo report.
Iran is close to a deal with China to purchase anti-ship cruise missiles, according to six sources, though no delivery date has been agreed. Officials working with Trump’s “Board of Peace” are exploring setting up a stablecoin for Gaza, according to five sources. Work on the idea is being led by Liran Tancman, an Israeli tech entrepreneur and former reservist, who is now working as an unpaid adviser for the board, two sources said. One source said the stablecoin was expected to be tied to the U.S. dollar. Another source said the idea behind the initiative was to “dry Gaza from cash so Hamas can’t generate any.” Some people expressed concerns that a stablecoin could be used to further detach the economies of Gaza and the West Bank. James Shotter and Neri Zilber report for the Financial Times. "

Tuesday Russia-Ukraine update:
Today marks four years into this war.
Hungary maintained its veto on Monday against new European Union sanctions on Russia and a huge loan for Ukraine, amid a dispute with Kyiv over oil supplies, in a blow to Europe’s pro-Ukrainian consensus.
In response, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X that “ultimatums” by Hungary and Slovakia should be addressed only to the Kremlin, adding that the two countries “cannot hold the entire EU hostage”.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told reporters Hungary’s veto was a setback as European countries have been unable to approve a 20th sanctions package against Russia.
European Council President Antonio Costa urged Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to honour the EU deal for a 90 billion euro ($106.11bn) loan to Ukraine, the Reuters news agency reported.
Four diplomats in Brussels told Reuters that Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto drew sharp criticism from EU colleagues behind closed doors in Brussels, with some ministers accusing Orban’s government of using the energy issue for political gain in advance of a tough election Orban will face in April.
Another round of talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine could be held at the end of this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Kyrylo Budanov, told Ukrainian media."Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Iran Update:
Trump weighs Iran options
A war against Iran could be a prolonged and damaging conflict with numerous U.S. casualties, Joint Chiefs Chairman Air Force Gen. Dan Caine has told President Trump and his National Security Council in recent days, according to Monday reports by Axios and the New York Times.
Trump had a different story, posting on Monday afternoon that “if a decision is made on going against Iran at a Military level, it is [Caine’s] opinion that it will be something easily won.” The president added, “I would rather have a Deal than not but, if we don’t make a Deal, it will be a very bad day for [Iran] and, very sadly, its people.”
The Pentagon has already sent nearly half of its deployable U.S. air power to the region. “Think air power on the order of the 1991 and 2003 Iraq war,” Robert Pape of the University of Chicago said Saturday. “Never has the U.S. deployed this much force against a potential enemy and not launched strikes.”
The likeliest options under consideration appear to be focused on aerial strike and subsequent air defense, Axios reports. “No one is advocating for an invasion or ‘boots on the ground’ military action.” Despite the next round of U.S.-Iran talks slated for Thursday in Geneva, the State Department on Monday evacuated non-essential personnel and family members from Lebanon “out of an abundance of caution and until further notice.”
“Trump has been leaning toward conducting an initial strike in [the] coming daysintended to demonstrate to Iran’s leaders that they must be willing to agree to give up the ability to make a nuclear weapon,” the Times reports. And if that doesn’t achieve the desired result, “he would consider a much bigger attack in coming months intended to drive that country’s leaders from power.” "

Wednesday Middle East update:
"The United States sent a group of F-22 Raptor jets from their station in the United Kingdom to Israel yesterday, according to a U.S. official and another source. Videos and photos captured by plane spotters show a dozen F-22s taking off yesterday. The move contributes to the U.S. military buildup in the Middle East amid discussion of potential strikes against Iran. Christoph Koettl, Aaron Boxerman, Sanjana Varghese, and Eric Schmitt report for the New York Times.
The U.S. military has moved more than 150 aircraft to bases in Europe and the Middle East since the second round of nuclear talks between the United States and Iran ended on Feb. 17, according to flight tracking data and satellite imagery reviewed by the Washington Post. Experts said it has surpassed the military buildup that was seen before the U.S. strikes against the Iranian nuclear program last year. Meg Kelly and Imogen Piper report."

Wednesday Russia-Ukraine update:
"In a televised address, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Ukraine and its allies were “pushing themselves to the edge” in their resolve to defeat Moscow and that they would “regret” their actions.
Putin also accused Ukraine of threatening Russian energy pipelines with the help of Western intelligence agencies in a push to sabotage peace negotiations.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Washington, Olha Stefanishyna, said the US State Department had advised Ukraine to “refrain from… attacking American interests” after expressing displeasure that Ukrainian attacks on the Russian port of Novorossiysk on the Black Sea had affected US oil interests.
“This reach-out was not related to encouraging Ukraine from refraining to attack Russian military and energy infrastructure. It was related to the very fact that American economic interest was affected there,” Stefanishyna told reporters in Washington, DC.
The US Embassy in Kyiv said in a statement that US “President [Donald] Trump remains committed to achieving a negotiated settlement and lasting peace that ensures Ukraine’s independent and prosperous future, with the United States as a strong and committed partner”.
Ukraine has dismissed a Russian claim that Kyiv is trying to obtain nuclear weapons with the help of the UK and France. “Russian officials, known for their impressive record of lies, are once again trying to fabricate the old ‘dirty bomb’ nonsense,” Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told the Reuters news agency."Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Thursday Middle East update:
"The United States and Iran will meet today for a further round of nuclear negotiations in Geneva, mediated by Oman. Four Iranian officials said that Iran is likely to offer a suspension of nuclear activity and the enrichment of uranium for three to five years. After that, Iran would join a regional nuclear consortium while maintaining a very low level of enrichment, 1.5 percent, for medical research. It would also offer to dilute the 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium it still maintains in phases. The United States, in turn, has to incentivize Iran with rewards, such as lifting both the threat of war and sanctions. Farnaz Fassihi reports for the New York Times.
President Trump’s senior advisers would prefer Israel to strike Iran before the United States launches any strikes, according to two sources. The officials are arguing that an Israeli attack would trigger Iran to retaliate, helping garner support from U.S. voters for U.S. strikes. One source said that the thinking among those closest to Trump is “we’re going to bomb them” as a deal with Iran seems unlikely. Dasha Burns and Nahal Toosi report for POLITICO.
U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff yesterday told a gathering of AIPAC donors that the Trump administration is demanding that any nuclear deal with Iran must remain in effect indefinitely, according to two U.S. officials and two other sources. “We start with the Iranians with the premise that there is no sunset provision. Whether we get a deal or not, our premise is: you have to behave for the rest of your lives,” Witkoff said, according to the sources. Barak Ravid reports for Axios."
