So the butcher block table we had delivered back in October has developed a few cracks. Contacted Boos and sent some photos. They replied back asking about my maintenance routine (I've never washed it as we've only used it as a serving table so far). So they are sending us an entirely new table once it is made, and told us to donate this one to a local non-profit.

I am impressed with how responsive the company is, and their superior customer service.

  • Great to hear. I love my Boos butcher block.

In my experience, new boards are exceptionally thirsty. Had you applied mystery oil or board cream yet?

my table is over 20 years now and theres a couple separations on the outside edge. im thinking that skirt edge isnt supported like the rest of the board . doesnt seem to effect anything. no split boards as you have on the edging. this is the time of year to really soak it down with the oil, wintertime is usually drier than the rest of the year with heating.

Love our 5 foot Boos table. Purchased in 1975 and it’s still beautiful!
    Quality company.

Loved my Boos blocks.  Picked up one from TJMaxx and one from Amazon on sale.  They were extremely thirsty when I received them.  The first one I didn’t oil (didn’t know I needed to) and it split a bunch.  Boos sent me a new one.  I drowned it it oil for a week, put in a garbage bag and soaked it.  It has lasted for years, oil about once a month. The other one wasn’t an end grain and wasn’t near as thirsty and doesn’t require as much maintenance.

On a side note, the one you made me a few years ago is going strong!  I drowned it when it first arrived and now I oil it when it starts to look dry (about every 2 months).  It is used daily.

AZ climate is hell on wood stuff.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

Yes, I was rubbing in a 4:1 mixture of food grade mineral oil and beeswax monthly. Even climbed under to do the underside as well.

I had a table size end grain black walnut board made. 4” thick. It drank a full gallon of mineral oil over the next few weeks. It was crazy.

Just piling on here but maybe omit the wax for the first year or so and let the oil soak in.

Those do look like bad glue joints though, I could see it splitting because it’s dry but it shouldn’t split where the blocks meet.

    Very impressive customer service.
I have an older Boos block, not end grain, and it's in good condition. I give it a nice mineral oil rub whenever I notice it looking kind of dry, so that certainly helps.

I'll be moving later this year and thinking about buying a good new end grain board, and it will almost certainly be from Boos.

    Discretionary fundage is currently unfungeable.
Though I might reconsider if it’s still after the weekend!
