Broken ceramic damper

Ok. I've only had my LBGE for about a month and I'm loving it. But, last week while taking the cover off, something caught the ceramic damper and pulled it off. It fell onto the concrete and shattered into about a thousand pieces.
So I'm thinking of just using the daisy wheel and closing the vents when shutting down. But what I'm wondering is, will the fire take much longer to go out than with the ceramic damper? If so than the extra lump burned over time would make buying a new damper pay for itself.
I've only had two cooks since it broke and the evidence is inconclusive. So I'm wondering if anyone with more experience(which is everyone here) knows if it's worth buying a new damper.

Welcome to the club. I broke mine and it took a couple of weeks to replace. The daisy wheel worked just fine, I am just a bit anal about the pieces parts and wanted to replace the cap. I also like storing the DW inside the dome to maybe reduce corrosion.
The new cap cost $23 at Ace Hardware.
XXL #82 out of the first 100, XLGE X 2, LBGE (gave this one to daughter 1.0) , MBGE (now in the hands of iloveagoodyoke daughter 2.0) and lots of toys -
I never actually used my cap till this year when I read about putting the dw in the egg upon shut down. This may be a dumb question but I am going to ask it anyway. Is the cap not covered under warranty?

Yup, if mine broke, i'd get a new one for shutdown purposes alone.Packerland, Wisconsin

Warranties don't work when you break the darned thing.

I used to shut down with DW instead of cap.. it shut down fine, and I didnt do a valid comparison to give an honest answer to your question.

I haven't used anything except the DW for 10 plus years. I don't even know if I still have my ceramic top.

Can you still buy the Ceramic Dampner for the large Egg cannot find it on the website?
I can find after market however I would prefer to get an original. -
the after markets are usually original. I bought mine from an after market place and it came in a BGE box.~~
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. -
I never got the ceramic cap and have always shut down with the daisy wheel, which seems to cut off the air flow just fine ion conjunction with closing the bottom vent. After 4 years of rigorous use, my daisy wheel is not corroded. However it seems to be permanently bonded to the Egg.
