Friday Russia-Ukraine update:
“[New U.S. sanctions are] an unfriendly act toward Russia, and it doesn’t strengthen relations between Russia and the United States that only began to get restored,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said yesterday. Putin added that Ukraine’s push to receive long-range Tomahawk missiles “is an attempt at escalation.” Ivan Nechepurenko and Anton Troianovski report for the New York Times.

Engineers have repaired a damaged high-voltage line and restored external power to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station in Ukraine, the facility’s Russian-installed management said. The plant – Europe’s largest nuclear power station, consisting of six reactors – was seized by Russian troops in 2022. It currently produces no electricity, but needs external power to cool the nuclear fuel and avoid the risk of a meltdown.
Russian President Vladimir Putin remained defiant after United States President Donald Trump hit Russia’s two biggest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, with sanctions to pressure him to end the war in Ukraine. Putin derided the sanctions as an unfriendly act, saying they would not significantly affect the Russian economy and talked up Russia’s importance to the global market. “No self-respecting country and no self-respecting people ever decides anything under pressure,” Putin said.
Deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, said Trump’s decision to cancel a summit in Budapest and impose sanctions on Russia showed Washington was “on the warpath” with Moscow."Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. President Donald Trump told reporters on board Air Force One, while heading to Asia, that he is “not going to be wasting” his time on meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin until he thinks a deal is in place to secure peace between Russia and Ukraine.
The Reuters news agency, citing a US official and another person, reported that Trump’s administration is also preparing additional sanctions it could use to target key areas of Russia’s economy if Putin continues to delay ending the war.
Reuters quoted the US official as saying that Washington would like to see European allies make the next big Russia move, which could be additional sanctions or tariffs.
Zelenskyy has welcomed the latest US sanctions targeting two of Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, “a strong and much-needed message that aggression will not go unanswered”."Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow successfully tested its nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile, a nuclear-capable weapon that he said can pierce any defence shield, and will move towards deploying the weapon.
“It is a unique ware, which nobody else in the world has,” Putin said in remarks released by the Kremlin on Sunday.

Tuesday Russia-Ukraine update:
"The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine has concluded that the Russian practice of routinely flying drones into Kherson, Ukraine, and dropping hand grenades on civilians amounts to crimes against humanity and war crimes, according to a report published yesterday. The report says that what could appear to be random acts of cruelty were actually an intentional pattern of attacks meant to create “a permanent climate of terror.” Andrew E. Kramer reports for the New York Times.
Russian oil producer Lukoil said yesterday that it would sell its international assets following the imposition of Western sanctions over the war in Ukraine. Lukoil did not identify specific assets to be sold. Reuters reports."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday that Kyiv was ready for peace talks with Russia, but it would not cede more territory as Moscow has demanded.
“It is not a plan to end the war. First of all, a ceasefire is needed,” Zelenskyy said. “This is a plan to begin diplomacy… Our advisers will meet in the coming days; we agreed on Friday or Saturday. They will discuss the details of this plan.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin acknowledges Trump’s statements urging other countries to stop buying Russian oil, but that Russia’s partners will make their own decisions on whether to continue buying its energy products.

Thursday Middle East update:
"Israel released a 15-minute drone video on Tuesday, allegedly showing Hamas members staging the discovery of a deceased Israeli hostage on Monday. The New York Times confirmed that the video was filmed in the Tuffah neighbourhood of Gaza City, and satellite imagery confirmed that dirt was moved from that area between Monday and Tuesday. It is unclear why the bag with the body inside was reburied and unearthed as shown in the video, or how that was explained to Red Cross representatives. Aric Toler, Arijeta Lajka, Monika Cvorak, and Liam Stack report for the New York Times.
Israel has erected nearly 1,000 barriers in cities and towns across the occupied West Bank since the beginning of the war in Gaza, according to an official Palestinian governmental body. The barriers include metal gates stationed at village and town entrances, which block access in and out, with the Israeli military sometimes stationed at them. Thursday Russia-Ukraine update:
"Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed yesterday that Russian troops have surrounded Ukrainian forces in Pokrovsk and Kupiansk. Putin offered to negotiate a deal for their surrender, adding that Russia was ready to open safe corridors for Western journalists to “let them see with their own eyes what’s going on.” Ukrainian armed forces said that Moscow’s claims about Kupiansk are “fabrications and fantasies, while the situation in Pokrovsk is “hard but under control,” a spokesperson for Ukraine’s eastern forces told AP News. Independent verification of the claims was not possible. Illia Novikov reports.

Friday Middle East update:
"U.S. officials intend to present a plan for the international force in Gaza in the next few weeks, three sources told Axios. “If we don’t have reliable security and governance in Gaza that the Israelis agree to, we will get stuck in a situation where Israel is attacking all the time,” one source said. Another source said, “The Israelis are nervous and skeptical because they are not in control and they don’t have the cards anymore.” A key issue concerns Turkey’s participation in the force. “The Turks were very helpful in getting the Gaza deal, and Netanyahu’s bashing Turkey has been very counterproductive,” a U.S. official said. Barak Ravid reports.
The United States notified Hamas that they had 24 hours to evacuate their fighters from areas of Gaza under Israeli control to the western side of the ‘yellow line’ through a proposal conveyed to Hamas on Wednesday by Egyptian and Qatari mediators, U.S. and Israeli officials told Axios. The proposal intended to stabilize the ceasefire and clear the Israeli-controlled areas of Hamas fighters. A U.S. official said that once the 24-hour window lapsed, Israel would be able to engage Hamas targets east of the yellow line. A senior IDF officer said no one had crossed over as of yesterday evening, adding that the Israeli army is “working on a thorough and systematic clearing of these areas.” Barak Ravid reports."

Friday Russia-Ukraine update:
Russia has fired the 9M729 cruise missile at Ukraine 23 times since August, a senior Ukrainian official told Reuters. The secret development of this missile prompted President Donald Trump to abandon a nuclear arms control pact with Moscow in his first term. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said, “Russia’s use of the INF-banned 9m729 against Ukraine […] demonstrates Putin’s disrespect to the United States and President Trump’s diplomatic efforts.” Tom Balmforth reports.
Trump’s planned Budapest summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin was cancelled following a Russian memo to Washington showing a lack of willingness to negotiate, sources said. The memo underlined Putin’s ongoing maximalist demands: territorial concessions, a steep reduction in Ukraine’s armed forces, and guarantees that Ukraine will never join NATO. Max Seddon and Amy Mackinnon report for the Financial Times.
