Remote Temp Probe Suggestions

I’ve decided to buy a remote temp probe for my Egg. The last time I looked at these (last year) it seemed the offerings were in transition to newer tech. I suppose that’s always the way. I’m looking for something simple that will transmit Egg temp and internal meat temp accurately and interface with an iPhone. No fancy predictive done time software needed, nor anything that will drive a chart recorder or data logger. It’s a cooker, not a lab oven. Suggestions?

I like Combustion Inc, but that is prefictive.

Meater’s work well, but are priced a bit higher because of brand recognition.

    Inkbirds seem nice.

Other than those, I would just look for something off Amazon for like $30 that has decent reviews and give it a try - the market is being saturated with low price knock-offs.

My soap box: Get a good name brand one with good history.  Ruin one piece of meat because probe went wonky would make the price delta not very important.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

Just based on my own experience, I would suggest a unit that offers both wifi/phone connectivity, and direct communication to a base unit.  I've gone thru many temp monitors/controllers, and could not get ANY of them to connect to my wifi*.  My latest unit, the Typhur, has worked very well for me so far; I wish the two wireless probes were a bit thinner.

*my wifi issues are probably just BotchLuck™.  I was able to connect my computers, Apple TV and iphone to my wifi with no issue, but have never been able to get anything else, including my multi-thousand-dollar HVAC system (the installers tried to do it for 45 minutes and gave up).  I've had the same luck with wintel machines at work my whole career; and the most common comment I always got from the IT folks was "I've never seen this before..."  (and everyone here who got on the Friday night Zooms know my incompetence with that "tech"...).  f*ng BotchLuck™...

the iphone requirement might complicate your choices because newer tech is always chasing features at the expense of reliability and quality.

if you can skip the iphone and accept a handheld /pocket / lanyard option this is my recommendation.

I'm surprised the RFX by thermoworks hasn't been brought up. It's pricy, but it is rock solid. It's pretty easy to just use it for tracking temps, but a lot of the advanced stuff is available if you look for it. Thermoworks is also a great company to work with if there's an issue down the road. The probes being dishwasher safe is nice. Just a customer.

Meater for your defined requirements.  Single probe will transmit thru the ceramics and give you protein temp and cooking environment.  App interfaces with an iphone.  Works well with the BGE (ceramic across several  feet-never measured the drop off point.). FWIW-

    To clarify...

Just looking for a monitor. My Egg holds temps rock solid and my longest cooks have only been about 12 hours. I said iPhone compatible in the OP but a dedicated base unit would be fine. WiFi connectivity would be great as I have strong signal throughout the house and on the deck. Max range (and I mean max) would be about 50 feet from the Egg.

I've considered the Meater product in the past but never pulled the trigger. It look slike a solid choice.

I have the ChefIQ I got for a good deal at Costco.  I use it as a guide so I dont have to open the lid and probe until its getting very close to done.

    Side note-
Family hates it since base unit is always chattering on about flipping the cook or some other instructions.  I think I finally got that turned off.

I surely use this more than the fan

I’d recommend getting one that doesn’t rely solely on internet connectivity. You don’t want to be a part of the annual Thanksgiving outage.

I'd go with the Flame Boss Wi-Fi thermometer. You can usually find one under $70. It only comes with two probes but can be expanded up to four probes. You can find cheaper Wi-Fi thermometers with more probes but to me the ease of setup, name quality, and a brand that will be around in a year or two makes it an easy choice for the money.
