OT - Stained Vitamix Container

Was in the dog house after having used the Vitamix to blend a potent batch of the venerable Urvashi Pitre’s butter chicken.

I generally use an immersion blender to mix the tomatoes, spices and whatnot, but I was unable to locate it, so used the Vitamix in a moment of weakness I would ultimately later regret.

The turmeric destroyed the Vitamix container, giving it a yellowish-orange hue despite endless washings.

Turned to the internet and found some claims that letting it sit in the sun would bleach it back to normal.

Set it out just a few hours ago during the sun-soaked day, and voilà, back in business. Never would have thought of that.

Lighting not great for showcasing the results but here’s the before and after. There were no washings in between the two photos - only sunbathing. Quite the striking difference in person!

Good tip! My blender is permanently yellowish from turmeric, guess it will be sunbathing this afternoon!

I posted on the off chance someone else had experienced this issue. Hope the results are similar to mine.

Also, I should have mentioned (and have already posted this somewhere previously), and you may already be aware, but the white film that builds up on the container can also be completely removed with a toothbrush and a mix of baking soda and water. Makes it look entirely new again. I give mine the treatment about once a year.

sounded like a reason to buy a second container. Although I've had a Vitamix for over 20 years and it just keeps going on the first container. I swear I could put a 2x4 through that thing.

30 years ago (and maybe still) Vitamix heavily advertised in Harrowsmith/Organic Gardening and the like. As a part of the selling pitch, they said your compost would "transition" much faster if you put all the skins/rinds/food-waste through the vitamix first, before putting into the compost pile.

That's the only time I considered a second container.

thanks for the toothbrush/soda trick, i'll have to give that a try.

I would not have thought that the solution could be so simple. Filed away for future reference.

Learned something new! What about the taste and smell, all gone too? If not, I'm thinking perhaps riceblasting may help?

"A question that probably some of you are thinking of if you’re totally into that world, which I find to be very interesting. So, supposedly we hit the blender with a tremendous, whether it’s ultraviolet or just very powerful light, and I think you said that hasn’t been checked, but you’re going to test it. And then I said supposing you brought the light inside the blender, which you can do either through the plastic container or in some other way. And I think you said you’re going to test that, too, @GrateEggspectations
    Sounds interesting, right?"

Sure I will get some 💩 for this, but I get the white residue off with a magic eraser and then just run whatever I cleaned through the dishwasher. Sure I am killing myself, the environment, et al. with my magic eraser usage. And strangely the magic eraser doesn’t do a damn thing for turmeric stains… it is a cloudy day, perhaps we will have a break soon.

AI for the assist.  Magic Erasers are primarily made of melamine foam. This foam is a formaldehyde-melamine-sodium bisulfite copolymer.

I never wondered or thought to ask before. We use them, even in the kitchen. Just haven't for anything food-facing.

I think formaldehyde is used to preserve bodies, or parts of them. You should be fine, maybe live longer than the rest of us.

also very good for cleaning the stylus on your turntable.  gently lower onto the ME and raise out. don't rub or scrub, all those grabby parts of the ME that scrub your whatever trap and remove the stylus dust just by lowering and raising the stylus into the ME.

No discernible scents. Not sure if that was the sun’s doing, or just the fact that perhaps the rest of my home smells of spices. Either way, I am at peace with it.

This just reminded me, that whenever we’ve looked for a new house over the years, any house that had white cabinetry/counters was immediately out of the running.

We’d look at the kitchen, say “haldi…” to each other (Hindi for turmeric) and walk right out.

@Legume thanks for the info. Was never curious enough to look up how they are made, but now I know. I have had enough formaldehyde exposure that I should be very preserved even without my magic eraser use 😆

Haha, brings back fond memories...when we were kids our mom would tell us not to wear white clothing when eating curry :😂

Do you sun bathe your IP gasket? We have one reserved for making bone broth and other heavy stain/smell stuff.

Funny you mention that. It actually crossed my mind after you asked about the scent of the Vitamix container post-sunning. But no, I have not.
