OT - Taxidermy projects?

This morning I volunteered with our local ornithology collection to learn how to work with birds. They were thrilled I knew how to tan skins and sent me home with an old frozen otter pelt and fawn skin to preserve (guess I know what I’m scraping this weekend). Any other folks enjoy taxidermy and willing to share their work? Also… if I’m ever trusted with a hummingbird to stuff for the collection I will know I have achieved something.

Very cool! What a unique experience too.
I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

No - but back in my early days of banking we had a regular customer who was a taxidermist who reeked of formaldehyde and you could smell him as soon as he hit the door. We also had a Famous Recipe Chicken shop owner whose clothes reeked of old cooking oil with a STRONG overload smell of chicken fat grease and he also could be smelled when he hit the door. And honest - this is no lie - we had a bank guard with standing orders to make sure that he detained one or the other to make sure both didn't come into our lobby at the same time! That combination of smells was HORRIBLE and would gag a person!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

Heh, this reminds me of a book I was assigned to read back in Jr High, Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, about an immigrant who moved to Chicago, and worked his way up down the job ladder, ending up in the worst job of his meat processing plant, stirring the final remnants of cows as they distilled into fertilizer, and having bus patrons abandon any seats near him when he went home because of the stench. The book ended with his exuberance when the Union wave hit at that time in our history.RRP said:No - but back in my early days of banking we had a regular customer who was a taxidermist who reeked of formaldehyde and you could smell him as soon as he hit the door. A half-century later, I’m thinking I should probably read this book again; have a feeling that a lot of the socio-economic forces (diametric) are still very much in battle these days…"First method of estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him."

@RRP my dad was a plumber so I have had my share of days helping him when I could tell by the way people avoided me that I had picked up some special smells. @Botch that is one of my all time favorite books. It is tied with More’s Utopia for me.Edit: Perhaps we need an OT what are you reading now discussion.

My first proper job was public facing and an old hand introduced me to 'own back lunches' when we'd choose something spicy at break to redress the balance against stinky customers.Other girls may try to take me away
But you know, it's by your side I will stay -

Was allowed to stuff a crow this morning! It took me almost three hours to collect all the samples and take it apart, but I know I will improve with time! Photos are in reverse chronological order. The dogs think I smell AMAZING, wait till they start to smell the loin bacon I just started smoking. -
I bet you are a whiz at Thanksgiving Turducken!

😂 @RRP I am pretty sure this makes folks even more skeptical of the things they are eating at the house.

Odd how a taxidermy post is starting to look like a fit on a Barbeque forum.BeanHead said:
