OT: Polishing SS?
CTMike
Posts: 3,641
So we’ve had the Wolf Induction range for a couple months, and my adult son and his kids have done the following damage to the apron:

They are all superficial (won’t catch a fingernail) but I’d like to polish them out if possible. Also looking for input for some type of protector I can apply to prevent future scratches (PPF maybe)?
The apron doesn’t really get hot.

The remedy is simple. Evict the perpetrators.

OMG don't let anyone come close with a scotchbrite sponge

I thought I put the fear of God into them when it was first installed. Gave them instructions on how to use it, etc.
I think what is happening is that when my son or his 15 y/o kid makes mozzarella sticks, they put the sheet pan across the apron, and then must drag it a little when they pick it up.I’ve told them repeatedly but it seems to get more scratches every weekend (when his kids are here).MMBGE / Large BGE / XL BGE (Craigslist Find) / SF30x80 cabinet trailer - "Ol' Mortimer" / Outdoor kitchen in progress.

Pretty much impossible to get that brushed finish back.more scratches and age like an old ss sink helps. Or see if you can get a new apron but it will happen againfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I’m going to call Monday and find out the price on a new apron, and I’m thinking about applying PPF or something similar.fishlessman said:Pretty much impossible to get that brushed finish back.more scratches and age like an old ss sink helps. I am pretty sure it was my stepmom (it sounds funny saying that as a adult)... Dads wife. I took a breath and told myself its just a stove. swmbo bounced the rims on our bmw off a curb, I took a breath and told myself they are just rims. do they catch my eye? yes. so I repeat lol

Those are perhaps not scratches, could be patina and memories.

I agree, they are minor scratches and it shouldn’t bother me so much, but we just spent $45K on this facelift/new appliances and it’s only been a couple months.alaskanassasin said:CTMike said:

I would ask Wolf for advice on polishing compounds. Toothpaste is a very mild abrasive that can restore things like headlights on cars. I swear by Barman's friend which has powder and liquid varients.
I PPF my cars, does the apron get hot? PPF and heat may not be great for you - melting or off gassing.
But check with Wolf.~~

If it were me, I would probably try different remedies from least abrasive to most. I’d probably start with a mild car wax, then maybe a car scratch remover, toothpaste, compound polish, etc. I remember trying to buff scratches out of my gasser years back, and I had good success. Wet, super fine sandpaper could also be an option.Strongly recommend you test all on an inconspicuous area before using it on the subject spot.

It was a lesson my dad taught me, but not the one he intended to teach lol. I am following this thread though I really would like to get the scratches out of my mine.CTMike said:

Indoor stove is a cooking tool, just like an outdoor grill. Those “use marks” look so mild, don’t fix them unless you are moving and want to really increase the sale of your kitchen. Be happy your kids cook for themselves and go on with your great life.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas

I’d like to do that, but my OCD tendencies won’t let me.Photo Egg said:Indoor stove is a cooking tool, just like an outdoor grill. @CTMike are you sure that’s not someone’s belt buckle or buttons on their pants? That doesn’t look like scratches that would be done with a pan. Especially not that many in such a short amount of time. I’m thinking someone is leaning against the front of it when cooking. Unfortunately as fish said there is no way to restore SS once scratched.Snellville, GA

This is a horizontal apron on the front of the cooktop so it’s not likely that a belt buckle or the like could be causing this.Eggdicted_Dawgfan said:@CTMike are you sure that’s not someone’s belt buckle or buttons on their pants? I know what you mean. I am exactly the same. Putting a scratch in my guitars gives me a conniption. Part of me tries to tell myself to accept them and forget; the other, stronger part works at removing them.CTMike said:

I see now. I thought that was facing outward. Man that’s a lot of scratches. We’ve had our wolf for about 5 years and there are minimal scratches on the flat surfaces. Hopefully you can resolve the issue.CTMike said:

I deal with brushed stainless steel all the time at work (elevator doors and interiors). I have never seen an end user successfully buff out their stainless. They always make a bigger mess out of it. A professional metal refinisher can do it but it’s probably cheaper to order a replacement part from the manufacturer.

Bar Keepers Friend?

Yep, that's the stuff. Got the name wrong above. Great cleaner and polisher. SWMBO left an empty Le Creuset kettle on a gas element that was barely on for an hour or two. The red enamel was scorched black. Bar Keeper's Friend and a lot of my elbow grease got that kettle shining like new.
