Like @Langner91 said, depends on how messed up it is.
Wire brush to spraying with oven cleaner and tossing into a trash bag overnight.
Just be careful to inspect for any wire brush bristles that fall off your brush and stick to the cooking grate. Don’t want those in your food later while cooking.

To the poor new guy/OP who asked the question (and got an unfair pile-on), try a wadded-up ball of foil first.  That works pretty well for both the flat side and the triangular side of a CI grill.
I use my CI almost exclusively, and almost always flat-side up.  I usually only clean it with a scraper with a straight metal edge, and that works for me.  Where I live I don't have any rust issues, so I can't comment on that.

I scrape my CI grid with this lifter/tool after every use, I also coat it with a light coat of canola oil spray then rub it down with a ball of aluminum foil.
I use the CI grid often, almost on every cook. I've had it for at least six years and it's in perfect condition.
Cook on it often, don't let it sit around without being used. I use both sides depending on the cook.
