Starting to get the temp thing right. still having trouble lighting it and getting going. I shopped on line last night and have some of the list you all said I needed coming. The main thing is a fire starter! 3-4 pieces of paper??? HUH. I boned turkey thighs and did sun dried tomatoes, provolone cheese and light stuffing, rolled and slow cooked. and twice baked but they could have stayed on a few minutes longer. I hope I get the picture thing right. LOL

Julie,
I use Rutland fire starters, from the hardware/stove aisle in WalMart. Cost about $2 for 24.[p]Ken

Julie,
Better run down to the hardware store and pick up a Mapp.Small easy to use. Most of the people use this unless you want a super charged version which requires a propane tank in the way, a weed burner.

• Julie,[p]Get a MAPP gas torch it will be much easier and faster. They are around $25 at Home Depot. I tried the newspaper when I first got my egg. I don't think I ever got it lit.
• Julie,
I bought a firestarter log (like for your fireplace). I take a screwdriger and break off a chunk that's about as big as a quarter and about 1/4"- 1/2" thick. Lately I've just been using one but I sometimes use 3 (evenly spaced).[p]Lighting it in the wind can be tough. In the cold weather I keep the log in the house to keep it pliable.[p]Also, I was amazed to see how well the paper towel soaked with cooking oil worked! I only needed it once, but it worked really well!

Julie,[p] I have some BGE starter cubes. I just break them in peices and use them. On really lazy days I use my MAPP torch.[p]

Julie,
The electric starter BGE sells works well, you just have to have an AC outlet handy. Starter chimneys are another option. If you don't want the MAPP torch, you can use a simple propane torch (like plummers use). The starter cubes BGE puts out work ok, but they smoke like crazy and give off an obnoxious odor when burning.
Why don't you try the electric starter, if feasible. Eight minutes and you're off to the races and you don't have to stay there with it. Most of the customers from our dealership get the electric starter. The torches can cause some pretty exciting spark displays when starting up the charcoal.

• Julie, have you ever heard of a "weed burner?" It is a flame thrower with a hose that connects to a propane bottle. I have one and, believe me, startaing a fire in the egg is not a problem. I just light it, turn it up to throw a good flame on the coals, and in a matter of about two minutes the coals are burning. The small torches you can get at Home Depot/Lowes are a mini version of a flame thrower, but nothing works like a weed burner. If you turn the thing up as high as it will go, which I don't do, it sounds like a tornado coming through. This is a tool Tim Allen would love. LOL Use Google and find one and order it. Your fire starting problems will be over.

Chuck/Tx,
it also has a long handle to stand back from the egg with, much quicker than the mapp and gives a more even burn faster in the egg than any other method ive tried. cleans the grill while lighting the egg.

• AZRP,
LOL, yes. This forum is a little differnt than others I am in. It does not seem to care what you type in for a name and I did not know this. So when I first listed questions I put us both in then it was just me. Sorry. Julie of juliem, Julie, Julie and Neil

• fishlessman, good points. I remove the grid when I start a fire so I can get the weed burner down close to the charcoal. Unless I put a plate setter in, the coals will clean the grid. In that case, I'll do as you do and burn the grid off with the weed burner, taking care not to over-heat and warp it.

Chuck/Tx,
be careful with the bge grill as to popping off the porceline, i use plain steel weber grills and the castiron grill mostly

• fishlessman, I understand and agree. I don't put too much heat (with a weed burner) on my porcelin grid that came with the egg. On my other grills (that have cast iron or plain weber grills), I do burn them off with the weed burner.

Flashback Bob,
?!?!?!?!?![p]did you steal this from one of my old posts? hahaha[p]glad to see it worked.[p]i have been doing the paper towel oil thing lately because i keep forgetting to buy starters.
i twist them tighter now than i used to and that works better, FWIW[p]i was the ceep bugger that came up with the fire log thing, but i can't take credit for the paper and oil trick. i forget who that was.

• Julie,
i love doing the boned stuffed turkey thighs. ..next time, try going indirect at 450 degrees for about 45 minutes to an hour. . they will still be nice and moist, but the skin will crisp up really nicely. .particularly if you baste them with butter and pan juices every 15 minutes or so. .. [p]here is a link to how i did them recently ...[p]glad to see a new, enthusiastic egger in the midst :)

egret, I love my electric starter when it's windy and freezing. It was buried in the snow and enough has melted that I was able to locate it. I'll use it tonight for my jerked Shake 'N' Baked pork chop. JCA

• Julie, mind sharing the deboned turkey thigh recipe ?
