my daughters house has these 6x6 posts supporting 2 different stair cases and I was wondering if because
of the cracks, should I try to seal them?

I have had this same issue. Search for "post caps". You'll need the one for 6" posts which is actually 5.5x5.5".You can also fill them in but you need to seal it otherwise the putty or whatever will just trap the moisture.Bondo or wood putty can fill in the cracks, but you need to paint a thick layer of some sealant that can handle the sun and heat, and expansion and contraction of the wood. Elastomeric paint or spar urethane. Roofing tar would be best.Get the caps.______________________________________________I love lamp..

its not really a structural issue, fir will do that and still last a very long time. i would get the caps if its an appearance issue. my deck is probably 40 years old or older and the fir posts have never been treated, painted, or anything

Maybe not a structural issue in New England but we have an entirely different collection of flora and fauna in the deep south. I have some fir 4x4 that I had encapsulated in paint. Water did some major damage.fishlessman said:its not really a structural issue, fir will do that and still last a very long time. i would get the caps if its an appearance issue. my deck is probably 40 years old or older and the fir posts have never been treated, painted, or anything

Not sure where Kansas falls on that environmental spectrum that degrades wood.
